Mark Steyn : 'Life on this planet' about to change
Orange County Register ^ | July 30, 2011 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 07/30/2011 9:35:14 AM PDT by Clairity

That thoughtful observer of the passing parade, Nancy Pelosi, weighed in on the "debt ceiling" negotiations the other day: "What we're trying to do is save the world from the Republican budget. We're trying to save life on this planet as we know it today."

It's always good to have things explained in terms we simpletons can understand. After a while, all the stuff about debt-to-GDP ratio and CBO alternative baseline scenarios starts to give you a bit of a headache, so we should be grateful to the House Minority Leader for putting it in layman's terms: What's at stake is "life on this planet as we know it today." So, if right now you're living anywhere in the general vicinity of this planet, it's good to know Nancy's in there pitching for you.

What about life on this planet tomorrow? How's that look if Nancy gets her way? The Democrat model of governance is to spend four trillion dollars while only collecting two trillion, borrowing the rest from tomorrow. Instead of "printing money," we're printing credit cards and preapproving our unborn grandchildren.

Another good article by Mark Steyn.

The Dems only have slogans, no solutions. In fact all they know is how to make things worse, destroy the country, as we know it, and they have the unmitigated gall to try to blame the Republicans.

Most pertinent line: "As Arthur Herman of the American Enterprise Institute pointed out this week, under present rules, if the government were to announce a spending freeze – that's to say, no increases, no cuts, everything just stays exactly the same – the Congressional Budget Office would score it as a $9 trillion savings. In real-world terms, there are no "savings," and there's certainly no $9 trillion. In fact, there isn't one thin dime. But nevertheless that's how it would be measured at the CBO."

Hey, I just developed a $9 trillion deficit reduction plan!

this man is brilliant. I fear for America. I don’t think we are going to get through the next 100 years. Thankfully I won’t be around to see it. And I feel sorry for my children’s children. This was once a great country.

“If the IMF is correct (a big if), China will be the planet’s No. 1 economy by 2016. That means whoever’s elected in November next year will be the last president of the United States to preside over the world’s dominant economic power.”

It took long enough, but the liberals are FINALLY achieving their goals. It’s a shame that we have helped them out so much along the way.

Anyone with a lick of sense knows this is the 'run away' path to total destruction. They (the elite progressive leaders) must believe they are going to be in the "Fortress of Solitude" with Superman, to keep them alive and well when America deconstructs completely; and America is divided into 2 states/nations or more and we are under total tyranny.

Cause that is the way this is progressing. NOW!

God help us be restored to our faith in Thee, LORD, in Jesus name amen.

And we trust the CBO to rate the various bills that come out of Congress? What a sham.

We should be very very worried about Obamacare.

The Dems only have slogans, no solutions.

I think the CBO is preparing to score the slogans, since that has been the only Democrat submission into the debate so far.

We’ve cut our budget down as much as possible. Trying like hell not to get into our savings. I just figured out that if we “break even” every month I’m going to save a bunch of money over the next decade. sarc

Only the government would count money not spent as money saved. Ben Franklin did not say “A penny not spent is a penny earned”?

“We’re trying to save life on this planet as we know it today.”

Who wants to save life as we know it TODAY? It’s a life of unfettered government overreach, regulation, taxes, dependency, restrictions instead of liberty. I, for one, want this life (Nancy’s “life as we know it today”) to disappear.

Thankfully I won’t be around to see it.

You may be unnecessarily pessimistic !

The US as most of us have known it prolly won't last another decade .. surely you'll keep on tickin' that long ?!

/s .. just in case

The Founding Fathers, and our forefathers, endured far worse with far less. If can’t emulate their service/sacrifice to some degree in these trying times, we don’t deserve to inherit what they fought, bled, and died for.

He does a good job of flaming Pelosi, but he’s really flaming the whole congress of right now as well as years past, both Republican and democrat.

And well he should.

Maybe the “elites” of both parties KNOW this can’t continue so they’re just going to kick the can down the road so they can live the high life as long as possible.

A 100 years? Some will call you a pessimist for this statement. I call you an optimist.
