I suspect her “forgiveness” was prompted by either a large cash payment to her family, or threats of being killed. That the suitor felt safe to throw the acid indicates that his clan is more powerful than hers, otherwise things would have been settled outside the court system.

According to the Iranian media, she felt some pressure from international human rights do-gooders. Quoted in the Daily Mail:

She said the international interest in the case was one reason for deciding to drop her demand for the sentence of retribution to be carried out: 'It seemed like the entire world was waiting to see what we did.'

The case attracted international media attention, and the rights group Amnesty International urged Iran not to inflict the retributive form of punishment ...

Amnesty should have shut up. The man was definitely guilty, and had been allowed his case in court. I hope the international human rights bodies will be ready to take responsibility if the perp - or someone else inspired by him - attacks another woman.

Tehran prosecutor general Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi praised Ms Bahrami’s move as a 'courageous act', and said the judiciary had until then been determined to carry out the sentence.
