A father's living torture ...to be haunted by the knowledge that your son was crying out for you while he was being beaten to death, and you weren't there.

Yep, where was this guy's father? I suppose it's a lesson to parents everywhere - - if your son is a "homeless" psycho, please help him before he ends up dead in the street. Get him committed, put him in the basement or the garage, anything...

He had a room where he could sleep whenever he wanted. He would come in and sleep in a car instead of a room because he was a ‘free spirit’. He did not want to be helped, and it is difficult if not impossible to commit someone against their will.

Once a person is an adult in age, it’s very hard to gain any control of them. You can do the 72-hour thing, but after that, unless they are obviously suicidal, murderous or voluntary agree to help ... nothing can be done.
