Debt Crisis: Republicans Scent Victory With 'Sugar-Coated Satan Sandwich'
Both sides express unease at the deal, but it is Democrats who have given most ground to raise debt ceiling
Ewen MacAskill 1 August 2011.
It was easy wandering round the corridors of Congress yesterday to spot who had won the debt standoff. In huddles with party colleagues or heading off to caucus meetings to discuss the details of the deal or standing in front of TV cameras, it was the Republicans who had all the smiles.
Democratic members of Congress looked uneasy, at times shifty; and some downright were angry. "If I were a Republican, this is a night to party," Emanuel Cleaver, a Democratic member of the House from Missouri, told MSNBC. Cleaver, a Methodist pastor and chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, which met to discuss its reaction to the deal, dismissed it as a "sugar-coated Satan sandwich".
Even the Democratic leader in the House, Nancy Pelosi, who helped negotiate the compromise with Barack Obama and the Republican leaders at the weekend, had serious reservations. Pelosi, a Californian on the liberal wing of the party on many issues, picked up on Cleaver's food metaphor and expanded on it. The deal, she told ABC, was a "Satan sandwich with Satan fries on the side". She voted last night for the bill to raise the debt ceiling, which passed by 269 to 161, but told colleagues in advance she would leave it to their consciences how they voted. Democrats came into the House chamber in a subdued mood, walking slowly as if at a funeral.

Also happens to be the sub of the month at Subway.
It is amazing how the foreign media always follow the MSM line. Opposite Land!
Of course. They refuse to acknowledge there's a God, but they're right there to let everyone know Satan does exist.
They must be meeting with him regularly.
This from the Washington Post on the impact on federal employees following the Debt Ceiling Deal:
“The second step of the plan would be the creation of a special House-Senate committee tasked with finding up to $1.5 trillion in savings. The regular congressional committees that oversee such programs could make recommendations, by Oct. 14, but would not be required to do so.
The measure does not specify potential targets, but the special committee could examine the numerous ideas for reducing federal benefits that have been in circulation for months. Those have included extending the general pay freeze beyond 2012, increasing the employee contribution to retirement plans, cutting federal employment through partial hiring freezes, reducing retirement benefits for new retirees by changing the way those benefits are calculated, and making cost-of-living adjustments less generous for all retirees.”
Now here’a a question. We all know of the pending student debt bubble. So why no cuts in federal tuition loans?
lol. They gave a huge increase to the pell grant program this year I hear.
Federal agencies issue bonus pay for executives who cut costs and personnel and thereby save their agencies money. Just remember, some officials somewhere will get a big bonus for cutting all these federal jobs or closing so many post offices.
Well, it looks like the liberals aren’t smiling other.
LOL! Overwhelmingly bizarre title.
Saul Alinsky was the one who praised Satan in his book. This administration has plenty who proudly studied and implement the Rules For Radicals playbook.
Nothing but projection from the Left once again.
I sense a new tagline...
