Interesting looking plane - not your father's AWACS.
The key piece of equipment of the AWACS plane is its multi-role electronically scanned array surveillance radar. MESA is an up-to-date electronic radar system that has antennas housed in a dorsal structure mounted on top of the fuselage. It is capable of transmitting beams in any direction and to any distance, in contrast to the disc-type radar mounted atop conventional AWACS aircraft that turns mechanically on its shaft once every 12 seconds.
In other news I hear the North Koreans are experimenting with an advanced system of their own: based on the Soviet model they're using centralized planning and distribution to avert mass starvation. No one was available for comment.

Your father’s AWACS isn’t exactly “your father’s AWACS” as you put it. The E-3 AWACS hasn’t been stuck in time for the last 30 years. It’s been continually upgraded, and if you buy the article’s description that this new AWACS can steer its beam in “any direction and to any distance” then you should watch out for people selling bridges.

You are right and I know it. (I also thought the description was amusing.)

As a former Rivet Joint linguist, all I can say is ‘God help them’.
AWACS stood for Airborne Without A Clue.
