Police have defused a bomb strapped to a teenage girl at a house in the wealthy Mosman suburb of Sydney. The drama began on Wednesday afternoon (local time) when an 18-year-old girl called police to alert them to the device. Police are reportedly treating the case an extortion attempt. Her parents were distraught according to police, and had not been allowed to speak to the girl. There were four specialist police officers in the house with the teenager, and the incident went on for over seven hours.
Prayers for God’s blessings on all.
Prayers sent for her safety.
Not totally new. Here's a lady who was killed by a necklace bomb back in the 1990s, I believe. Just one case among several in South America.
FARC rebels put it on her and because their demands weren't met, let it explode. The bomb squad couldn't do anything for the poor woman.
Thank God for heroes, like those police.
That is terrifying. To know that the device could go off at any minute and the clock just ticks by. It is one of those times that you think to yourself, “I hope it was very quick and she was aware one moment and gone the next”. Sad!
The story now is that the pizza guy was in on the planning, but thought the bomb was going to be a fake. When he discovered it was real, they basically forced the collar on him at gunpoint. A woman was convicted and is doing life+30 years and a guy is going 45 years (effectively life since there’s no parole in the federal system and the guy was 55 when convicted). Another conspirator died of cancer a couple of years before the arrests were made in 2007.
“... the pizza guy was in on the planning..”
Can you imagine THAT conversation?! “What do you mean it’s REAL.. didn’t we decide it would be fake?!”
“Voting?”
It hasn’t done the trick for the decades we’ve been bleeding manufacturing jobs, and the “information superhighway” expedited the exodus of white-collar jobs now as well. While the Kenyan Pirate isn’t helping matters, this started long before he was elected (and was part of the reason why people were desperate enough to elect him).
Here’s a good writeup on the pizza collar bomb story, written a few years after when most of the facts were known:
