As FAA Shutdown Continues, Obama Pleads With Congress to End Stalemate

Published August 03, 2011 | FoxNews.com

President Obama ratcheted up the pressure on Congress Wednesday to return from a monthlong vacation and end an impasse over funding the Federal Aviation Administration, which is in the 12th day of a partial shutdown that has left more than 70,000 airport construction workers and 4,000 FAA employees out of work.

"This is a lose-lose-lose situation that can be easily solved if Congress gets back into town and does its job," the president said at the start of a Cabinet meeting.

It’s not only pork, to keep subsidizing little-used airports that some Congress critters use to flay to and from D.C.

Certain collective bargaining regulations for “common carriers” (planes, trains, ships & buses) and the FAA were set by Congressional regulation and became standard for decades now.

If Obama wanted to change the labor regs in favor the unions inside the FAA he could have asked Congress to change the labor laws that set the standard that has been in affect for the FAA for decades.

Knowing he could not get the Republican led House of Representatives to agree, he had his head of NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) simply declare new collective bargaining rules for the FAA - in favor of their Union.

Now, as the House’s funding bill for the FAA restores the collective bargaining rules for the FAA BACK to what they had been for decades, back to before Obama’s dictator at the NLRB changed them by Executive fiat, the Dims are arguing that the GOP is “taking away” “rights” of the FAA unions.

That’s why there was no funding for the FAA.

The Dims would not accept a bill that restored the collective bargaining rules for the FAA back to what they have been for decades.

As usual, the Dims tried to slide one in, and now they are claiming it’s all the GOPs fault and are holding the FAA hostage while claiming the GOP is making them do it.

The (R)s better get used to being blamed for everything and anything. They will be dragged down and beat up verbally until they learn to fight back. And they had better learn fast or you and I are going to pay the price. This nicey-nice attitude toward governance is getting old fast. Palin said it last night . . . she sick and tired of walking around with a “kick me” sign on her forehead.. . and so am I.

You are correct. The Senate is once again sitting on a bill that they refuse to have a vote on.

The Rs will cave on this too eventually after they are ridiculed for being mean spirited long enough.

This actually is a short term win for the Republicans because while the FAA is unfunded it cannot collect the airline taxes. One estimate is that the government could miss out on over $1 billion in airline taxes if the situation is not resolved until Congress returns in September.

A major government agency, even one that involves airplanes flying all over the US is shut down and the world didn’t end? Planes didn’t all fall out of the sky?

Why bother refunding it. What exactly are they doing, besides spending tax dollars.

70,000 construction workers must now sit on their hands as all airport construction has halted.

What exactly is the FAA's role in airport constuction? This is just a new one on me!

I saw a post on another thread that Canada doesn't have an equivalent of the FAA -- yet they have airports AFAIK.

I guess that whole 14th amendment nonsense can’t force the appearance of expired taxes.
