White House on worst market drop since 2008: Markets go up and down 1 hr 5 mins ago
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 512 points Thursday, erasing this years market gains, but the White House had little to say besides markets go up and down.
I dont have a specific reaction to the market. Markets go up and down, White House press secretary Jay Carney said.
There is no question that we have this economy has faced headwinds this year, a variety of them including the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the increase in oil prices, energy prices that resulted from the unrest in the Arab world and the situation in Europe, also, Carney said. So, our focus has to be on the things that we control which is to take the necessary measures.
Todays 4.31 percent drop put the Dow below 11,500 and is the worst one-day loss since October 2008, when the Dow slid by 679 points.
But the stock market also did something it hasnt done in more than 33 years: decline for nine straight sessions. Todays drop is the worst since Feb. 22, 1978, when Jimmy Carter was president.

Who is trying to destroy what? I don’t understand.
At least the other Press Secretary(Good God brain is going, I forgot his name, someone remind me) was entertaining in his stupidity..this guy is just a moron..a puppet for Obama who goes on TV and makes an utter fool of himself
oil prices? made worse by Obama meddling in libya and shutting down the Gulf.
unrest in Arab world? made worse by Obama meddling in Eqypt and Libya.
and the elephant in the room is the debt crisis that was directly caused by Obama, Pelosi and Reid. They are taking out this country and must be defeated, destroyed and humiliated.
Robert Gibbs, it came back to me LOL
The fact today's huge slide happened one day after Obama's 50th birthday celebration could someday be equated with what Marie Antoinette said about "let them eat cake."
she had work done “up yonder”
Outstanding sir!
Transmissions need maintenance every 75,000 miles...
I’d say those headlights are the new high intensity discharge types!
When asked about the crash of the DOW today... the keynesian kenyan said, **** the market. Pass me the bong and a cheeseburger dude”.

Hey... even a battery has to be recharged every now and then. ;-)

the worst since Feb. 22, 1978, when Jimmy Carter was president.
Obama takes top honors from Carter.
I imagine the left_wing media would explode at such a blaise answer if a Republican Administration responded the same way.
“Let them eat cake”
I shouldn’t be pedantic, but I can’t help myself. There is not record of Marie Antoinette ever having said “Let them eat cake”. The anecdote comes from (proto-Communist) Jean Jacques Rousseau’s autobiography, “Confessions”, in which he says “a certain princess”(unnamed) said the famous words.
However, in context, her remark was not outrageous at all. In a sort of precursor to the Food Stamp program, bakers, in exchange for a royal permission to conduct business, were required by law to make available a cheap form of bread made with roughly milled grains at a low price for the poor. If they ran out of the peasant’s bread, they were then required to sell their other wares for the same low price. So, if there was no bread for the people, they got to have cake.
This is now a MAJOR campaign issue.
Sad thing. It will get worse.
our focus has to be on the things that we control which is to take the necessary measures.
It’s too bad some enterprising reporter didn’t ask him...
Mr. Carney, what in the hell are you talking about?
Just what measures DO you control? How DO they
affect the situation?? Or are you just blowing
smoke up our butts?
Shut up. Look at the picture of the pretty girl. Obama’s antics mean nothing. Have you seen the latest “Top Chef?”. /s
But you HAVE to agree that the contrast between Obama's very glitzy 50th birthday party and today's 512 drop in the DJIA makes Obama look REALLY bad PR-wise and will become fodder for the Republican Presidential candidate.
