(excerpted) Authorities had been collecting marijuana plants on Round Mountain at the end of Rabbit Lane, according to a sheriff's report.
"We could hear the rounds pass by and hit," Fontes said.
Officers initially thought the shots came from the growers, Fontes said, but later discovered it was Speyrer who lived in a nearby home.
According to the report, when officers noticed Spreyer in the area, they approached her and ordered her to get on the ground.
Here's what the report states happened next:
"Why do I have to get on the ground," the senior asked.
"You shot at us," two officers responded.
"Damn Right I shot at you," she replied.
"From her house to where we were there was a heavily thick wooded area," Fontes said. "She couldn't see us and said she had no clue who was up there. She told us she was trying to scare off whoever was on the mountain. We explained to her you just don't shoot blindly at people who are on adjoining property ." Anyway, I get it. She's going on 80, and I'll guarantee you see lives alone in a house where you can't see your nearest neighbor. She knows people have been going there that have no business being there. The officers go pull up marijuana plants without letting her know they'll be on the property behind hers. She's trying to protect herself from unknown dangers. More than likely, she didn't know about the plants. Trust me, when people come walking down the wooded ridge behind my house into the cow pasture that don't have permission to be there, I am armed when I tell them to go back the way they come and go to the State Park if they want to "hike in the woods". There is only one neighboring house that sees mine, and she's at work all day. The officers should have notified her while the other officers pulled up the plants. They weren't dealing with an inner city gang member.
She lives on rabbit lane, hell she was rabbit hunting.
We jus smiled and waved, sittin on that sack of seeds.
Y’all come back now, ya hear?
I had a little-old-lady living next door for a number of years. She told me (and I heard convincing evidence) she would shoot at ANY car that pulled into her driveway after dark.
She knew there were thugs about, and wasn’t about to become a victim.
I know it’s serious but you still have to laugh. Sounds like a story you’d hear on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour...
“Why do I have to get on the ground,” the senior asked.
“You shot at us,” two officers responded.
“Damn Right I shot at you,” she replied.
I don’t care what you say, that’s funny right there.
Sooooo, now cops have to alert people that they will be NEAR their property? Some people will go to any length to make a point that they think the cops are wrong. What did this lady think? That a sniper was setting up to take her out and she was getting the drop on him?
I’m absolutely with you. If I see anyone on my property who hasn’t called and asked permission to hike through my woods, I meet them with a gun and run them off.
Good on you Grandma. Tough old girl.
If they didn’t tell her they were there, oh well.
I will give credit to the officers. In many stories such as this, she would have been put down by the officers for the simple reason that she shot at them. These are “police” men. They are not there to kill whoever opposes them, they are there to “police” the area, and they did so.
Oh Great - another silly new rule. ;o)
Sounds to me like she was taking care of business, old school. Wish she was my neighbor!
Too bad the 'police' position is that everyone on the planet now has to somehow be aware of what they are doing, what their intent is and what their actions mean.
We’re on a hill on the river. There’s a canoe rental place near us, and sometimes canoers camp in the river bottom below our house. They tear up the brick grill we made, leave piles of their literal poop and toilet paper, and sometimes trash laying around. - Husband embarrassed a guy in front of his kids one morning about it. I’m sorry about it, but we live in evil times.
Is there a way you can post a sign like “No Trespassing” or “Trespassers will be shot, survivors shot again” or something like that?
I had the same reaction. I'm so glad no one was hurt, but I had to crack up when she told them "Damn right I shot at you"!
I totally agree with you. Once time I had a party at my deer cabin. We were shooting skeet. We had put up a sign on the highway with a simple arrow sign pointing the way. We also put up for laughs a sign at the cabin that said “ Valet Parking”. Some dimwit lady apparently thought she was driving up to a garage sale and called the cops saying their were some “Militia people” shooting guns. Two county cops showed up and just laughed and laughed and told us to continue to have a good time.
