Army to Cut Yearlong War Tours to 9 Months

Aided by the shrinking troop requirements for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army is cutting the current yearlong deployment tours to nine months for most of its units beginning next January.

The change will not affect any of the Army troops deploying this year, and some high-demand units -- such as aviation and military police -- will continue to serve 12-month tours.

The move comes as the Iraq war continues to wind down and as the U.S. begins what is to be a slow, deliberate withdrawal from Afghanistan.

And it reflects a reduced demand on the military as the Pentagon looks to shrink the size of the Army and Marine Corps and slash budgets in line with the administration's attempt to rein in spending.

Axis troops in WWII could fight straight for 9 months - Allied troops could do 6. I don’t know how we’re going to fight Libya in our third front in the War Against Islam...

If we were in Middle Earth, as “men” from Gondor, would normal rational people be fighting for Gondor or Mordor?

I couldn’t imagine Gondor’s men fighting with the same heart if every advertisement behind the walls showed people that didn’t look/smell like them...

One suspects that the only result of troop ‘withdrawal’ is that terrorists will begin more and more to engage us on US soil.

This administration has fought tooth and nail against even the tiniest spending cut. It's not believable that cutting the military budget has anything to do with cutting spending - more likely they want to gut the military (a longtime Dem policy) to free up money for Obama's stash and the interest on the $6 trillion debt he's still racking up.

Terrorist have a decade to attack us on our soil. There are many outlets for them to get here, or be already present. The simple fact is that terrorism is a small threat on the larger theater of conflict. However, Gov't uses that threat and enlarges said problem to push their collective control over the populace.

It’s been highly unlikely any terrorist would come over here, with so many troops abroad to get after. That will now change, mark my words.

Since the Taliban were driven out of Afghanistan all we’ve become is a lighting rod of recruitment for terrorists. There is no strategic national interest...its become a slow death of a thousand cuts.

Think about it this way, if hostilities were to stop there what would change for us? Nothing.
