Guess the ‘joke’ is on you, Sergeant
By Howie Carr
Sunday, August 7, 2011

BOSTON HERALD

Cops don’t expect to get arrested for drunken driving. Neither do state reps. A cop who has 30 years on the job and four years in the Legislature never, ever figures he’s getting lugged.

Just ask Sgt. Mark Preston of the Seabrook, N.H., police, who is charged with ingesting a bad ice cube a week ago at Salisbury Beach.

According to the police report quoted in the New Hampshire Union Leader, Preston’s response to his arrest was to launch a filibuster, just like he was back in the N.H. House of Representatives.

“What about the brotherhood? This is (bleep). Why aren’t you taking me home?”

Did I mention his party affiliation? Democrat.

The Salisbury cops had no choice but to arrest ex-Rep. Preston, because he’d allegedly slammed into a parked Kia that then skidded into two other cars.

But the police didn’t have to humiliate their “brother” by quoting him at such length. Then they filed their reports at the courthouse in Newburyport, giving reporters even easier access to them.

After slamming into the parked car, Preston took it on the lam. He abandoned his Jeep Cherokee and started hoofing it back to New Hampshire, a few hundred yards north. When they caught up with the lamster, the Salisbury cops showed him no respect.

“If this happened in Seabrook, we would take care of you guys! This is ridiculous,” Preston is quoted as saying in the police report. “You guys are a (bleeping) joke! I am a 30-year sergeant and you are going to do this to me? Really! My life and career are over! I hope you guys are (bleepin’) happy!”

The Democrat statesman went into another tirade as soon as the cell door clanged behind him.

“You’re not putting me in a cell, right? I am not going into a cell. This is how you treat a cop?” the report reads.

Then, according to the police report, he started in with the threats.

“This is not what would happen in Seabrook if this was you guys. We would take care of you! You’ll see. I will make sure we return the favor to you. You better watch out when you drive through Seabrook. You guys speed!”

Actually, the Salisbury police did him a favor. The town’s former police chief is due back in court in Lynn tomorrow, charged with four counts of larceny. He got $44,685 in so-called unused vacation time as he was forced out last winter.

Bottom line, the local constabulary isn’t too popular in Salisbury these days.

A crowd quickly gathered near the accident scene and, according to the report, “Over 100 people, most of them angry and irate, began to yell how Salisbury police were corrupt.”

Sgt. Preston is due back in court Aug. 22. He could not be reached for comment. I guess he got it all off his chest last Sunday night.

Something has been very off about Howie’s sahow lately. Too many idiot callers, too many ‘soft’ subjects that are just boring.

At first I thought it was just Sandy being off on her honeymoon—I find her extremely irritating but she’s a good producer—but it’s been just as bad since she came back.

Howie going on about beautiful people while he has hair tansplants, liposuction, and is lobbing softball after softball to Scott Brown so he can get his daughter a job with him—he sure ain’t a man of the people anymore.

I miss Jerry Williams.

I'm glad I'm not the only who has noticed this. As for Sandy, she's been annoying for a very long time. I remember one incident where Howie had asked her to do something and she was fighting him, something like putting something up on the website and she barked back that she was busy - Howie asked her nicely to make sure it was up by a certain time and she argued with him - he finally had to tell her it was his show not hers and to have the info up on the website by a certain time.

I heard a bit of the show the other day where Howie wanted Scott Brown on the air about the debt ceiling because callers wanted to know where Brown stood - Howie got all riled up about it and then when Brown got on the air Howie folded. How much longer does Howie have on his contract - it is next year or the year after he can flee RKO? He has a lot going on what with the books and appearances and doing the masters of suspense with mcscreamer and casey sherman and doesn't seem to be devoting too much time to the radioshow. I hope he can get a grip and return to the show to the way it used ot be.

“mcscreamer”

Her show is exhibit A when I want to describe a show as “unlistenable.” If I switch from Rush to Howie a little early and have to hear her voice, I turn the sound down until 3.

On another thread it was stated that mcscreamer is going to be doing tv only come September. What no-talent will be taking her place? They replaced rush with that horrible charlie manning and replaced him with the even worse mcscreamer, who’s next? I caught a minute or two of the mcscreamer show last week and some lib whackjob named samanatha clemens was on the air filling in for mcscreamer -I hope they weren’t test driving her as a replacement, she was God awful and I had only listened for a minute or two!

Sandy has always been annoying but she was worse in the past when she was a total Clinton suck-up. She's moderated somewhat over the years after getting tired of being pounded by Howie over this.

Yeah, Howie has been sucking up to Scott Brown lately because he still goes on Howie's show. Sooner or later Howie is going to turn on Brown; until then, it's "he's better than Ted Kennedy would be!"

Most times Howie does the “he’s better than Marsha Marsha” - sometimes I can’t tell Marsha Marsha and Scott apart!

The banter between Howie and Sandy is scripted and intended to be part of the show. I would agree that Howie has been a bit off his game lately - both with the radio show and his columns. Fortunately for Howie, a lot of his columns "write themselves" (as he would say) because he does not seem to be putting a lot of work into them lately.

I think he'll improve once the book tour is over and the 2012 campaign kicks into high gear. As for WRKO, I'm guessing that Howie, for all his attitude towards the AM dial, will re-up with them when his contract is up. Where is he going to go to? 96.9 has taken a turn for the worse since they got rid of Severin. The guy that replaced him is pretty awful, it's a shame they didn't put Michael Graham into that slot.

I think people are too tough on Michelle McPhee. She may have a voice that only a Bostonian can love but her show is almost always good.

I just cannot stand her. Her voice is grating and her ‘I stand for the little guy’ thing, while it may indeed be sincere, just comes off as sucking up to her perceived audience. I can usually understand why even people I don’t like make it in the communications industry, but I can’t imagine anyone liking her shrillness.

When they lost Rush it was like pulling the foundation out from under them. Finneran is an utter joke, but his co-host is excellent—yet I loathe Finneran and his insider crap. (I have a neighbor who’s a friend of the Kennedy’s so I have little tolerance for that.)

If Howie gets any worse I won’t listen to him at all, just Rush. I don’t have time to listen to the entire show of either, but the few minutes I get of Rush are always worth it, even if I don’t agree with him, because he indeed does have an original and informed take on things. If Howie’s going to keep up this lame stuff, I’m gone.

As much as I like Feinberg I can’t listen to that show. Finneran is too much of a hack and cooksey is just beyond rude and ignorant. Ingraham is another screamer, lunch money doesn’t do it for me and mcscreamer, well mcscreamer no matter how good people claim her show is, I just can’t get beyond the screaming high pitched voice. I listen to Jeff Katz on talkradio 1200 - most of his show is a replay of interviews from the day before and from the hour before but he’s not a hack or a felon and doesn’t have an ignoramous for a producer! As someone mentioned above, perhaps after the book tour and the masters of suspense thing is over Howie will settle down and start actually doing a radioshow, until then I’d rather listen to music than hannity who is on opposite Howie or I’d rather half listen to Howie than Hannity!

As a listener, I don’t find the banter, scripted or not, between Howie and Sandy “good radio” - it’s ridiculous most days. Howie has always talked about moving permanently to Florida and maybe once his contract is up he just may pack up and find a station in Florida - but - no one does Boston politics like him and no one rags on the “maya”, kennedy and whitey like Howie! I hope you’re right about things calming down after the book tour and the 2012 elections starting to heat up - hope Howie can rein back in his audience. As for mcscreamer, I personally don’t care how good her show is, for me, I can’t get past the high pitched, ear bleeding, glass breaking voice!

I don’t think I’ve gotten beyond Hannity’s intro.

Maybe I’m just aging out of the talk radio phase. There are a lot more and better things to listen to than Howie hawking his book and not giving Scott Brown a hard time.

I used to like Ingraham but she’s changed. Her show just drags, and she just complains. Rush can get fiery and his anger brings out his sense of humor. Ingraham sounds like someone shouting for me to clean up the kitchen. Haven’t listened to her on purpose in months, but caught a little of her talking about the debt ceiling thing—she was actually saying something I believe but in such a way I couldn’t shut off the radio fast enough.

I stopped listening to Ingraham awhile ago, her show is a scream fest and when she’s not whining she’s hawking books, t-shirts, etc. etc. etc. She teases a story for an hour and a half then spends about 40 seconds on it - as for rush, well, I can’t stand listening to the ego inflation - most days he spends at least an hour if not more talking about himself or talking about the media talking about him - he can be condescending and doesn’t take criticism very well - I want someone who talks about the issues not himself, not his golf game, not his cigars, his jet, or what kind of candles he uses or what kind of beef he buys I don’t want to listen to someone who rolls into the fetal position or be condescending when someone disagrees with him or points out something that is incorrect. He isn’t trust worthy, he lied in the past about meeting with obama then came clean when it was suspected that someone was going to tell everyone about it - he’s not better than the politicians he talks about everyday.

I don’t know, Rush isn’t perfect, but no one is. I am prepared to dump on anyone who doesn’t listed to opposing views but I have no idea where you’re coming from there, he seems to have more calls from people who disagree with him than any talk show I’ve heard. (If he were that much afraid of them, they never would get on.)

I only listen to these folks for a little bit, but they are on for hours and hours each day. If everything in your post is accurate (I’m not accusing you of anything, btw, just don’t know what you refer to with the Obama reference), that’s not a whole lot to hold against a guy who’s been providing me with a lot of things to think about for over 20 years.

Maybe I give him a pass, but he’s earned it, and as I say, I only drop in and listen. I’d rather be doing something else if I’m at home.

Howie’s show is the best when he does a JF’nK segment.

He should dedicate a 1/2 hr every day to “Kerry Watch” and give it his all, like he used to do with Fat Boy and the ‘Wizard of Uhs’.

Call it “Liveshot and Lovey”?

I’d make sure I was listening just at that particular time...
