Perry, shown here with [Speaker Gib] Lewis in the background, was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1984. He came to be known as one of the "Pit Bulls," members who sat in the lower pit of the House Appropriations Committee and bitterly fought spending increases. - PHOTO: The Texas Tribune/Courtesy of Texas State Library and Archives Commission

“....and bitterly fought spending increases.”

Sounds like just what we need!

“...the last really close general-election race Perry had was in 1998 for lieutenant governor, and the media strategist for his Democratic opponent, John Sharp, was a familiar name—David Axelrod.”

Ruh roh. this was a *really close* race? That means that ax knows Perry’s hotbuttons. And he will darn sure push them. Every one of them.
I ain’t liking the hint that he is vindictive too much either. Enemies list keeps popping into my head.
Still gathering info, but to be honest, the more I learn, I am liking Perry a little less as time passes. Even the Texans on this board are divided about him, some of whom I respect very much.

I'm nearly 62 years old and I've never had the opportunity to vote for a perfect candidate. Considering who's occupying the oval office right now I would vote for a stale donut to replace him.

I'm sure three enough wrong with Perry to disqualify him for many people but he was born in this country, doesn't seem to be actively trying to destroy it and understands that all of the amendments to the Constitution count.

Hes good enough for me

He was actually better looking—and stunningly so—in his middle years than as a young man or now, into his 60’s.

I do not like Perry.

But he would be better than that limp guy the republicans rolled out to run.

For the Free Republic Record........ Few modern democrats can claim this honor

Perry was in the Boy Scouts (BSA) and earned the rank of Eagle Scout; his son, Griffin, would also later become an Eagle Scout.[9][10] The BSA honored Perry with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.[11]

He is an extremely astute politician with a keen sense of where voters are, and he has great instincts on message, has surrounded himself with a very loyal staff, and has never been fully vetted by the media? Sounds a bit like campaign-mode Obama.

And you say Perry and some of his staffers are known to have thin skins, too? All Perry needs now is an African dad that abandoned him right away, and a white bleeding-heart mom who’d drag him around overseas before abandoning him as well, some communist/terrorist mentors, and a shady non-record of mystery and non-accomplishment in lefty academe, and he is Barack Obama, by this account.

What seems important to me is that the State of Texas approved a massive curriculum change in public school Social Studies last year. In this revised curriculum, no longer does left wing propaganda dominate. Instead, the course reflects the contributions of Americans whose reputations have been suppressed for decades due to a liberal bias. Certainly, there has been a great deal of criticism from liberal leaning think tanks and from Hispanics who angrily declare that the revision is yet another white dominated assertion, leaving “minorities” as afterthoughts. From what I read, the progressives want to villify everything traditional and white in favor of everything race centered. I am not sure how long this “old fashioned” curriculum will be in place without some fool suing the state of Texas, but its appearance in the first place says, to me anyway, something good about the Governor of that state.

“Either way, this is going to be great theater”

I’m intrigued that Matthew Dowd can so trivialize an election that will define the future of the United States of America.

Should Perry run, this bit about him on Wikipedia will need an answer from him and his supporters:

Perry had to get out of academic probation to be a student leader. According to Perry's transcript, he rarely earned grades above C – with C in U.S. History, D in Shakespeare, and D in economics. In his animal science major, he got a D in veterinary anatomy, and F in the second semester of organic chemistry. He received A's in world military systems and "Improv. of Learning".

We've heard about the intelligence and sheer genius of obama ad nauseum, just as we've heard about how stoopid Reagan, GWB and Sarah Palin was/is over and over again.

You know more the same will be coming for Perry if he gets in, so be ready for some answers and snappy comebacks.

I'd be interested to hear what Perry believes regarding three or four issues. It would also be nice to see how he has acted on those beliefs i.e. does he really believe what he professes.

I've not paid that close attention and know nothing about him.

Perry has never been fully vetted by the media.

And obummer has?? Give me a break. The [mostly local] media never backed down from blasting every comment Perry made in public, and were singing praises for Elmer Fudd, since he was a businessman.

When he shot the coyote while jogging, they went ape. They ridiculed him (and still do) for living in the house out in the Westlake area (I think), instead of an apartment or duplex.
