Not that my hopes as to what the Super Committee would accomplish were ever that high, but it still hurts to hear one of my congressional heroes call out the improbability of any meaningful accomplishment emerging from the work of the joint committee. The Wall Street Journal reports:
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), a top choice among Republicans for a deficit-cutting super-committee formed last week, on Sunday sought to tamp down expectations for the panel.
“I don’t think a grand bargain is going to come out of this,” Mr. Ryan said on Fox News Sunday. He said that any deal for more than the $1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction over 10 years that the committee is charged with finding would depend on whether Democrats were willing to agree to overhaul entitlement programs. “I don’t see any agreement from the other side getting anywhere close to doing that,” he said. …
“People are overemphasizing what this committee is going to achieve,” Mr. Ryan said.
“I want to make sure people understand that I don’t think this is going to be a committee that is going to fix all our fiscal problems,” he said.
Of course Ryan is right. So far, all that has ever proceeded from the painful and prolonged deliberations surrounding any budget debate — starting with the CR debates at the outset of this congressional session — is the absolute bare minimum to preserve the status quo. But that doesn’t mean whoever ends up on the Committee shouldn’t try — or that those of us watching and commenting shouldn’t encourage their attempt.
In the same Fox interview, the House Budget Committee Chairman was also cool about the credit downgrade. “We more or less saw this coming,” Ryan said. That’s certainly the reasonable position to take, even though everybody from George Will to David Axelrod seems determined to write off the downgrade as anything but what it was: An accurate (and should-have-been-expected!) reflection of the nation’s lack of perfect creditworthiness. Now is certainly the time to stop the blame game — whether whom the pols and pundits are blaming is S&P, the Tea Party, Democrats or Republicans — and focus on solutions. May I humbly recommend the plan put forward by my former employer, The Heritage Foundation? Or, for that matter, the original Ryan budget?

I think it would kill any of these people to cut out one real dollar from the budget. It is always let's cut 10 cents from projected spending.

If my representative is a Tea Party supporter and excluded from “The Committee”, have I lost my representative voice? In my opinion, this is a scam to keep the Elitist in power. It is time to identify the Congress Critters and see to it they are removed from office.

Good question. He’s a politician? Isn’t the first time a politician adopted a position that he did not believe in. I suspect that the proposal he made, involving a $6 trillion proposed cut to the baseline, was what he really wanted. This is going to be a multi-decade process. You can’t expect the US government to turn on a time. As long as they are moving it in the right direction as fast as they can move it, I will not blame them. Instead, I’ll blame the opposition party that is in control of the Senate and the White House.

Pardon me, but that’s just pure bunkum. The House controls the spending, taxing and borrowing. The House is controlled by Republicans. The Republican controlled House just authorized trillions of dollars in new borrowing. All they had to do was vote NO and HOLD THE LINE!!

House needs to do CR funding until this super duper committee thing is done.
All this super committee does it make recommendations that will be embodied in legislation that all members of congress will vote on. There is your representative voice.
Legislation routinely comes through committees, the difference here is the representation is equal between the parties instead of tilted towards the majorities in each house.
Do you not yet understand it was the republicans that caved? Sure they passed CC&B, great move. When Reid wouldn't vote on it they should have said, "We did our job, now we're adjourned until the senate votes on it."
But no, the stupid pubbies violated the cardinal rule of negotiating, "You NEVER bid against yourself."
Do you not understand we would have a balanced budget today (since we'd be on a cash and carry basis) or CC&B would have been passed into law if the pubbies had not caved? The law we have, which is nothing, is 100% the fault of republican leadership. We had it, we couldn't lose, but, as always, the leadership found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of sure victory.
It is not constitutional. It is dictatorial. A lousy 1/3 passes it. It will be struck down once standing is established. I am through with Ryan the rino . He voted and campaigned for this joke.
