We don't do water cannon, we rely on consent ( Theresa May, Home Secretary UK)

Vigilantes were forced onto the streets last night to protect their homes and businesses after police failed to materialise at many of the scenes of looting and violence which swept across London.

As officers lost control of the streets locals were forced to take the law into their own hands, arming themselves with sticks and chasing looters away from their properties.

In Dalston and Hackney, north-east London, Turkish shopkeepers and their families fought back against looting youths, before spending the night standing shoulder-to-shoulder in an attempt to deter further attacks. One man said: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.' Despite increasing calls for the police to get tough with the rioters, Home Secretary Theresa May today sparked anger as she appeared to dismiss the notions that water cannons and even the Army could be used to ensure violent scenes are not repeated tonight.

As police were slammed for appearing to let looters run riot under their noses, Mrs May instead advocated a more softly-softly approach.

She said: 'The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.'

OK, first your little aside about your “age” implying you know more and the whole canard about civics class. Yes Mensa boy, I learned civics in school and it was modeled in my home as well, I am not some young pup who was brought up thinking I was “entitled” to vent my anger or discord on others for a wrong done to me. That is what laws and courts are for, disposition of a grievance perpetrated on ME by others, even if they are Police officers.

You seem to postulate that all of these wannabees somehow were “injured” by a shooting on a thug who yes has his rights and if they were violated it goes to the laws to be dealt with. Not several thousand idiots to go and break into shops and stores to show their anger. What in your twisted logic accomodates their “injury” to visit it upon innocent people who did not fire the gun or participate in the action in the first place.

Ohio State (I think you meant Kent State, maybe you were just misinformed) the “students” did this as a movement to show they were in control, once they took the building they asked each other. The National Guard abused their rights and should have been prosecuted for it.

Anarchy in any form is not allowable, it is our right to overthrow a government which has become tyrannical and the framers knew it, and tyranny can take other forms like creating an environment where the “governed” think they are entitled to harm others as they damned well please because they are somehow entitled to take anothers denial as their own.

They’re really into loyalty.

We live among Mexicans and Central Americans. My prayer group has some lovely, Spirit-filled gentleman who were not (from their testimonies and tattoos) always so Spirit-filled and gentlemanly. If a mob comes after Brother Roberto's paint shop or Brother Vicente's Salvadoran bakery, they'll be met with more than just prayer!

Enough “mow them down” and it actually gets better. I’ve been to London. They have streets that are both long and wide ~ plenty of room for the body bags.

There's an entire class of people in UK just like her. They wouldn't want to emigrate to America (that is, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) because that would needlessly enrage the cannibals.

By now it's an hereditary mental illness ~ anybody who does not have it should LEAVE NOW.

UK will not get better for centuries with this crowd in charge.

Sometimes it’s not about having enough police, or even having guns ~ sometimes it’s about not having a strong people’s militia ready, willing and able to leap to assist the forces of public order when they are most needed. UK could certainly use a uniformed reserve force. Try this little recruiting video from the Indianapolis Police Reserve ~ http://www.impdreserves.com/

Good point. I was wondering this morning, "Where are the rest of the people?" It seems to me, that these shop and business owners, and their friends, and their friends, could all don the same color shirts and arm themselves with bats, clubs and knives and drive off, or have them driven off by ambulance, or hearses. Tell the police you're going to do it, and explain to them you're not asking permission. The authorities obviously are not going to stop this, just seemingly wait it out till it stops.

Don’t use water cannons—use real cannons! Napoleon used a whiff of Grapeshot to end a riot in Paris once. You Brits need to grow a spine or snap the chains on and let the Islamic people rule. Your liberal polices and “kindness” destroyed your nation. Mobs of foreigners did what The Spanish Armada and Hitler couldn’t do—but that was when England was ruled by Men.

No reason for cops to gun people down during a chase, esp if the person is just trying to get away. So the cops were wrong to gun down the criminal in the public street and should have simply arrested him at a different time, when they could cuff him and put him in a paddy wagon as opposed to summary execution.

What if he is actively engaged in shooting at police at the time?

"Sir, you may proceed your way. But you should be aware that we may go before a magistrate and apply for an rrest warrant."

And now you all want government agents to arm themselves to the teeth to fight citizens. Yeah of course it now is just looting.

Maybe others here, but not me. I'd prefer to have armed citizens arming themselves to the teeth to fight marauding criminals bent on assaulting innocent people and destroying property.

As those Koreans in L.A. figured out back in 1992, having no police force at all is better than having a useless, ineffective one that is deliberately restrained from doing what they're paid to do.

Yeah I did mean Kent state.

And your point about courts is exactly right....the murdered drug dealer was entitled to a trial for whatever the coppers had evidence on. They killed him instead, then tried to make out like he had shot at them. Only when the ballistics were done, the alleged bad guy shot was from a po po gun, imagine, that. Thought that only happened int the US

Well, since you were fortunate enough to have been taught civics, perhaps you remember this old saw: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Because all of the reportage I’ve had a chance to look at said the dead guy fired a gun at an undercover officer, with the bullet lodging in the LEO’s car. Was that reporting incorrect?

For what it's worth, the most recent statement from the IPCC indicates that it was indeed incorrect. It now appears that only police weapons were fired. A weapon was recovered from the car, but it hadn't been fired - and there are even some reports that it was hidden in a sock. Not that any of this makes any difference to the rights and wrongs....

Actually, no. True the coppers did assert they had been shot at, but the fact is, when they ran the ballistics, the alleged bad guy bullet was from a po po gun.............
