I would agree, except that I would modify it to: most elves, most men and most dwarves. Some of all these groups were heroic.

But then the vast majority of hobbits were totally uninvolved. They didn’t volunteer to go off and fight for the good of the world. Those few who actually fought only did so when the war came right to their front doors.

It just shows his ignorance. He meant it as in insult but didn't understand what LOTR and hobbitses are all about.

More than likely someone in his family (or on his staff) was watching LOTR and thought it would be "trendy" to mention hobbitses, LOL!

We should call McCain “Wormtongue.”

Why is it that when this subject comes, doesn’t anyone point out that the Hobbits overcame overwhelming odds, an entrenched and powerful enemy and were ultimately victorious?

If they want to call me a Hobbit, I’m okay with it.

Why keep him? He is doing them more good where he is than when they had him.

He is helping Obama destroy America.

It is also relevant that hobbits had been ignored for a very long time as irrelevant to power politics.

IOW, their enemies drastically misunderestimated them.

I’d be proud to be a hobbit. I’ve always considered Sam one of the most admirable characters in literature.

So Nazgul* McCain doesn't like hobbits.

*He's lived a long time, has been corrupted by the ring beltway of power and has been called by his evil lord to hunt us down. Sounds like a Nazgul to me.

This is stupid. Hobbits don’t demand apologies. We should just send him some pipeweed and don’t invite him to the scouring of the Shire when it is all over.

You are most correct... what was I thinking? I retract that statement and wish they had forwarded mccain directly to a soviet gulag! Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways!

“What’s the matter with the place?” said Merry. “Has it been a bad year or what? I thought it had been a fine summer and harvest.”

“Well no, the year’s been good enough,” said Hob. “We grows a lot of food, but we don’t rightly know what becomes of it. It’s all these ‘gatherers’ and ‘sharers’, and we never see most of the stuff again.”

“All right, all right!” said Sam. “That’s quite enough. I don’t want to hear no more. No welcome, no beer, no smoke, and a lot of rules and orc-talk instead. I hoped to have a rest, but I can see there’s work and trouble ahead. Let’s sleep and forget it till morning!”

What a total Jerk.

Standing there with his arms crossed with that all so familiar irritated look.

In recent months we have been called so many names that together they no longer fit on my t-shirt.

McCain clearly meant it as an insult. It was suppose to belittle us and paint us as fanatics. Even lying about it now serves as an insult to our intelligence.

On election night many of these name-calling politicians will be getting their very own new t-shirt. Just one name on it though: LOSER.

I re-read the chapter "The Scouring of the Shire" a few days ago and found it an inspiration.

I was extremely disappointed that that chapter was left out of the movie. It goes to the heart of the character of Hobbits

"Those few who actually fought only did so when the war came right to their front doors."

Not true. Those who LED the fight "went off to foreign parts". When it came time to clean up the Shire, the vast majority "did" fight. It just took leadership to get them started.
