Carney: Unemployment Benefits Could Create Up To 1 Million Jobs

"I understand why extending unemployment insurance provides relief to people who need it, but how does that create jobs," Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler asked Jay Carney at Wednesday's WH briefing. Carney responded: "Oh, uh, it is by, uh, I would expect a reporter from the Wall Street Journal would know this as part of the entrance exam." "There are few other ways that can directly put money into the economy than applying unemployment insurance," Carney said. Carney answers the question: "It is one of the most direct ways to infuse money directly into the economy because people who are unemployed and obviously aren't running a paycheck are going to spend the money that they get. They're not going to save it, they're going to spend it. And with unemployment insurance, that way, the money goes directly back into the economy, dollar for dollar virtually." "Every place that, that money is spent has added business and that creates growth and income for businesses that leads them to decisions about jobs, more hiring. So, there are few other ways that can directly put money into the economy than applying unemployment insurance, Carney said.

Using your logic: if all the ATMs were replaced with bank branches open 24 hours and staffed with tellers, we'd all be better off.

ATMs are a more efficient way to perform banking functions, but providing government money and oversight to implement those ATMs would wreck any potential benefits.

UI in my state does not cover the necessities but does keep the electricity on and allow the purchase of food and medicine. I would not have been able to pay for doctor visits without it; would not have been able to afford the internet connection to search for jobs; would not have been able to pay for gas to go on job interviews. At least the money was going to the local supermarket, gas station, and doctor’s office that did hire some of my neighbors.

Is it in the Alinsky handbook to say something so ludicrously stupid that they won’t know what hit them or are they this stupid? All of em- Pelosi,Carney,Obama all of the DNC are they this stupid? Even someone with not a lick of common sense can see this theory is stupid. If Obama screamed in arabic on TV and said he hated us and wanted us dead and he eats babies for breakfast;seriously... would all the nimrods on GMAmerica and Cokie Roberts defend him and say he is great?

We can not afford to provide more than 6 months unemployment for anyone. That is the guaranteed 26 weeks plus one extension. Some have got them for 99 weeks. We can’t afford this.

Well using Rush’s comment after San Fran Nan said this some time last year: “We should lay everyone off and be on unemployment and everyone would be employed within weeks”.

Good gosh, these morons are totally insane.

This is so stupid. I am for unemployment benefits, but you have to be a real nut to think it’s going to add jobs in any real way. If it did, why doesn’t the government give everyone a free $50k check a year, working or not. That way, we’d all be spending more.

I TOTALLY agree with you. Any ignorant worthless FReeper (and there are plenty of idiots on this site) who wants to do away with Unemployment can pound sand. The unemployed are not unemployed because they want to be.

But Unemployment benefits do not create jobs. They are temporary assistance until a job can be found. How the hell does unemployment benefits create jobs? I'm lost.

You are missing the point.

Where does the money come from for the unemployed?

Do you pay taxes?

Unemployment dollars are pulled out of the economy thru taxes, or borrowed, and then the person getting them spends them. Net zero or increases the “credit card balance” for the US.

Maybe I'm too simple-minded to understand their THEORY.

We have an economy that is based on CONSUMPTION, not PRODUCTION. Until you create productive, good paying jobs, no matter how many people you give a check to you aren't producing anything other than a socialist economy.

Someone said it yesterday in another thread:

"So Peter is going to borrow from Peter again to pay Paul.."

NO LEADERSHIP or VISION.

All I see are politicians TREADING WATER while they try to figure out how to compete in a global economy with one hand tied behind your back.

In my opinion... "we're miles from nowhere".

I think Obama and the progressive ilk think that a global currency and order AKA global communism will work. Does he think China won’t wanna rule and kick our ass more than they are now? In a NWO how will the terrorist countries fit in? Will they be accepted at all the UN global meetings?

Reminds me of something from years ago, entitled “Hire Education”, it goes something like this:

A small, unincorporated village badly needed a bridge. After a number of years of letter-writing, glad-handing, and general politicking, they managed to get government to pay to build one.

At the village meeting, citizens expressed fear that their fine new bridge might become a target for vandalism. Someone suggested hiring a watchman.

The watchman was hired, but had to be paid. An accountant from a larger nearby town was retained to do the bookkeeping and accounting tasks, but he pointed out the need for a treasurer. While the villagers discussed this at one of their meetings, someone suggested that a treasurer should be supervised, so in addition, they created the job of mayor for the first time in village history.

The next year the government cut funds, so the mayor, treasurer, and accountant suggested firing the watchman.

“So is the White House admitting that letting people keep and spend their own money creates jobs,...”

Great point - hopefully someone on the Hill will read your post and use it for ammunition in budget debates.

Or am I dreaming again?
