Louisiana may have been also, but I’ve got to recheck those numbers. I’ve misplaced the link for the % figures. A lot of those states were playing with fire having such large Black (slave) populations (and Louisiana was at risk for having a Haitian-style revolt, and almost did at one point). The arrogance of slaveholders in thinking they could permanently keep a majority in bondage was audacious (and eventually it did come back to bite them).
How the Dems reclaimed power was achieved via a mixture of the ballot box (and the restoration of White voters), intimidation and eventually disenfranchisement. It also didn’t help matters that some (not all) of the Republican officeholders were corrupt. There were also internal party fractures that didn’t help matters. While I’m sure some of the White pols were concerned about the Black plight, just as many were more concerned about maintaining power and lining their pockets. As time went by, Blacks were becoming more sophisticated politically, but there just wasn’t enough
time to develop before the Dems swept back in and gradually (or swiftly, depending upon the state) took it all away.
Add to that, too, the nation was tired on the issue and didn’t want to have yet another war and permanent occupation which would’ve been required to maintain Black enfranchisement and civil rights (1876 put an end to that, as a President Tilden would’ve ended the occupation and Hayes wouldn’t have been seated had he not agreed to do the same). No argument that Blacks got a raw deal regardless.
And the poor “needed” the the new deal like I need a hole in the head.
Romney can be Ambassador to Mars and Hunstman can be Ambassador to the bottom of the sea. ;p
It’s too bad the majority vote couldn’t be harnessed to prevent that.
Wow, EXCELLENT post!!
Thank you very much ;)
