China to start landing drills on aircraft carrier

BEIJING — The Chinese military could launch air exercises on the nation's first aircraft carrier which was unveiled earlier this week, state media reported.
The manoeuvres could include aircraft approaching the ship, landing and then quickly taking off again, the Global Times newspaper said, citing a military source said to be closely involved with the landing drills.
The aircraft carrier embarked on its inaugural sea trial on Wednesday, prompting the United States to call for an explanation amid concerns about the nation's military expansion.
Beijing only recently confirmed it was revamping an old Soviet ship to be its first carrier and has sought to play down the vessel's capability, saying it will mainly be used for training and "research".
The Global Times report said that radio restrictions have been imposed in a maritime zone off the coast of the country's northest Liaoning province where the carrier is docked.
The planes being used for the drills are the Shenyang J-15, a Chinese version of Russia's Sukhoi Su-33 Flanker,

Luckily klintoon doesn’t have Navy friends to show the PLAN how to keep from running into the ship.
With the “high quality” of chink equipment, it’ll probably pull the back half off with tailhook, that is if they ever get that close.
Me thinks they have a lot to learn and a very steep learning curve, all around.
Between flight simulators and short take-off and landing drills, I suspect they have a lot of the training covered. It'll be interesting, though, to see the attrition rate from the mobile (and in-motion) airfield aspect of carrier take-offs and landings. I also have to wonder if ski-jump carriers like the Varyag have some equivalent of a cold cat failure.

I spend a good portion of my time in China and have flown on most of the their airlines. Two things that will kill you...their airline food and their pilots. The only thing that may kill you faster is trying to cross a busy street
Regarding Chinese carrier operations let us not forget the Chinese bragged about how good their high-speed trains were until that devastating accident exposed their lies and shortcomings to the world. Could Chinese shortcomings be exposed again in the areas of moving too fast in carrier operations?
So how’s that “free trade” thing working out America?
Will we start to pay attention when our dollars have paid for a second carrier?
A fifth?
A fiftieth?...
I figure the Chinese look at it as population control. They just need to have plenty of warm bodies ready to go. It’s a quantity vs.qualility thing.
Enjoy the military superiority while we have it. With our failing economy and the Chinese expanding economy, we are headed for a day when our carriers will be mothballed and the Chinese carriers will be drilling off our coasts.
With her distinctive sloped runway, her silhouette shouldn't be hard to spot.
Her Ukrainian DN-80 gas turbine engines each develop 24,300 horsepower and are unlikely to propel the Shi Lang anywhere close to the boasted 30 knots. The ship is so obsolete that her greatest threat is to the sailors on board.
And then you have the interaction of the deck crew with aircraft taking off, landing, and taxiing. How are the Chinese going to handle that? Even the American navy with years of practical experience still has people getting blown over the side and crewmen walking into props and getting sucked into jet intakes due to the close proximity of men and machines on the flight deck. How will the Chinese handle that?
The more I read about how rushed the Chinese schedule is, the more I'm inclined to agree with you. Why the rush? I think they're trying to kick off the new leadership transition in 2012 with a bang, when Hu Jintao is scheduled to retire.
Touch and goes will likely be the first step before they do traps.
First work on the approach on to the moving deck.
They have likely worked on doing traps at a land facility. Would it have been the concrete carrier they built on land?

Agreed, and besides that, the US Navy has been operating carriers for almost 100 years. China had to purchase their carrier from the Ukraine. Hell, they’re entire space program was purchased off-the-shelf from Russia, too.
It’s impossible for me to be even a tiny bit impressed with China’s navy. You know, for a country that is so impressed with itself, they aren’t very impressive to me. They buy and steal their technology and equipment and then everybody starts fretting about “a rising China”.
It’s not worthy of all the hoopla and attention we are paying to it.
