Addressing the ceremony on Bernauer Street, famously divided by the Wall and now site of a memorial, Mayor Wowereit said the capital was remembering the "saddest day in its recent history". "It is our common responsibility to keep alive the memories and pass them on to the next generation, to maintain freedom and democracy and to do everything so that such injustices may never happen again," he said. At a ceremony at a former crossing-point, President Wulff said the wall had been "an expression of fear" of those who created it.

I was in Germany when they built that damn thing and it caused all the troops stationed there to be extended for a number of months. I was supposed to rotate back to the states after 24 months but had to stay until my enlistment ran out, which made my stay 31 months instead. None of us were too happy, except for the fact that the war that was expected to start over the building of the wall never happened, but we did have to go on alert.

Compared tho The Great Wall of China, it wasn’t that impressive.

Wowereit? Wulff? Two scumbag politicians that make conservative Germans wish the wall was back - with them on the other side.

A buddy was stationed in West Germany. He had a Masters in German from the U of Missouri.
He was a “listener” to East German radio traffic.
His insights were fun...

I was in the Philippines when they built the wall. The entire PACAF went on full alert. Didn’t make much sense to me then.

The tearing down of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Soviet Union are among the too-rare proofs that good things can happen in world events. The Wall was erected before I was born and I never thought it would come down in my lifetime.

I knew a guy that was also in Germany at the time, a newly minted
junior officer. His unit was rushed into West Berlin, and he said
the aircraft above the convoy had red stars, not white.

I was stationed in West Berlin from 84-88. I, too, never thought the wall would come down.

How long since Kennedy declared that he was a jelly donut?Ha! Good one. I'm not sure, but I think Jackie explained the secret meaning of that term in her tapes.

It’s been awhile since I was in Europe. Not to well-versed in German politics. Sorry if something in the story offended. I just thought it was interesting.
