AUSTIN, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) – Texas Governor Rick Perry on Thursday said that Arizona’s immigration law would not be appropriatre for his state, saying the focus must remain on border security. Texas has a long history with Mexico and shares the longest border with the country of all U.S. states - more than 1,200 miles. Both have had many encounters through history including an historic armed conflict which led to the Mexican-American War in 1846. “As the debate on immigration reform intensifies, the focus must remain on border security and the federal government’s failure to adequately protect our borders. Securing our border is a federal responsibility, but it is a Texas problem, and it must be addressed before comprehensive immigration reform is discussed,” Perry said.

Perry did take significant measures to secure the border without doing something that would alienate Hispanics.

Name it.

Yes. You are correct. But there is no telling the Perry haters this. They’re determined to smear him.

Rick Perry said he was Fine with NY’s gay marriage law
Rick Perry was hand-picked by Karl Rove and is an establishment Republican
Rick Perry is no conservative

Maybe I am wrong in my interpretation of that quote, but isn’t Perry telling the Mexicans that the only way to open the border is for them to stop being a rotten, low rent sewer? He is basically calling the Mexicans filthy cockroaches in polite terms here.

No Lazlo, the money quote from the article which tells Perry's focus on this issue is this statement by him:

"Some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe."

Yes. You are correct. But there is no telling the Perry haters this. They’re determined to smear him. DRey, I know dealing with the cold harsh facts/reality is harsh when you've drunk the kookaid of Perry Propaganda, however, if you give a good ol' college try, you can do it!

Furthermore, anytime, anyone, drags out the Hate card you know they have lost the argument.

Like Paul , he feels it’s up to us to remove the reasons they come.

It’s not up to us to prohibit their coming.

We cannot ever remove the reasons that make them chose to come.

aw but au contraire, you most certainly can by simply making it impossible for illegals to get a job or benefits.

Take away the carrots, and they have no reason to either come or stay.

Indeed. I've been one of Perry's loudest critics, and for good reason, he's a RINO. But I don't hate the man. Seems some just can't separate the two.

Rick Perry's record on border security.

» Starting in 2005 with Operation Linebacker, the state has sought to provide funding, manpower and equipment to local law enforcement agencies operating along the Texas-Mexico border.

» The state's latest operation, Border Star, builds on the successes of previous operations with unprecedented local, state and federal law enforcement coordination. With the assistance of the 80th and 81st Legislatures, the State of Texas has been able to appropriate more than $110 million each session to fund and amplify these efforts.

» In response to a rising tide of gang violence in Texas communities, the Governor allocated $4 million in criminal justice grants to cities across the state to increase patrols of gang hotspots. In 2009, Gov. Perry worked to secure more than $10 million in state funding for enhanced anti-gang efforts during the 2010-11 biennium.

» In September 2009, Gov. Perry announced the formation of highly-skilled Ranger Recon Teams — which include Texas Rangers, Texas National Guard Counterdrug forces, Highway Patrol and DPS Aviation assets — in order to address threats building in the unincorporated areas along the Texas-Mexico border.

» Since early 2009, Gov. Perry has repeatedly called on Washington to authorize the deployment of 1,000 Title 32 National Guard soldiers to the Texas-Mexico border to support border security operations currently underway. (see letter to President Obama, letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and request to Defense Secretary Gates)

» Gov. Perry has also recommended an expeditious deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles to provide real-time surveillance and intelligence to law enforcement on the ground.

Excellent! I'm glad to see your boy can do more than just go to Mexico and advocate for open borders. Really, I am.

But anti-gang units is securing the border? If you say so.

Nice effort on your part also, more than you've ever bothered to put in before. Now if Perry could just reverse his liberal positions of luring ILLEGALS to America through his open border advocacy and side with other border states who are being sued by the Obama admin he might actually have some real credibility on the issue. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Perry will be another GW Bush on the issue of “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”.

I don’t want any more Republican presidents who will do the liberals work for them.

Don't get me wrong, I am in favor of the effort, but unfortunately the Arizona law will be rule unconstitutional by SCOTUS since it is the job of the Federal govt to enforce immigration law.

Since bank robbery is a federal crime why do local law enforcement officers "bother" enforcing that law?

Perry comes out against the only effective state-level legislation that deals with Illegal Immigration

Hmm, since the Arizona law has never been enforced, how can you make that statement? You are trying to make a case that because Perry doesn't think SB1070 is the right approach for Texas, that he is by definition pro-illegals. Wrong. States have different approaches to the problem. Perry has preferred to try banning sanctuary cities, tried passing a law to require e-verify, and passed a law requiring voter ID. He also has a standing request to place 1000 National Guard troops on the border to beef up enforcement.

No, I don't know it. Maybe you don't know that he did.

In a speech in Mexico in 2007, he said supported completely open borders, calling for the “free flow of individuals between these two countries who want to work and want to be an asset to our country and to Mexico.”

I pretty sure bank robbery is a state crime unless you cross state lines.
