Each year for the past two decades, the U.S. Census Bureau has reported that over 30 million Americans were living in “poverty.” In recent years, the Census has reported that one in seven Americans are poor. But what does it mean to be “poor” in America? How poor are America’s poor?
For most Americans, the word “poverty” suggests destitution: an inability to provide a family with nutritious food, clothing, and reasonable shelter. For example, the Poverty Pulse poll taken by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development asked the general public: “How would you describe being poor in the U.S.?” The overwhelming majority of responses focused on homelessness, hunger or not being able to eat properly, and not being able to meet basic needs.[1] That perception is bolstered by news stories about poverty that routinely feature homelessness and hunger.
Yet if poverty means lacking nutritious food, adequate warm housing, and clothing for a family, relatively few of the more than 30 million people identified as being “in poverty” by the Census Bureau could be characterized as poor.[2] While material hardship definitely exists in the United States, it is restricted in scope and severity. The average poor person, as defined by the government, has a living standard far higher than the public imagines.

I would describe poor as having to live in a dangerous, crime infested neighborhood. Living in fear doesn’t compensate for the xbox, free lodging, free food, and free cellphone.
This is a joke...Most people living in Honduras have TVs and AC.

Interesting perspective. When I imagine poor, I imagine living like my Ozark inlaws a generation or two ago. No road to the house, no running water and an outhouse. But if you asked them if they were poor and needed a government handout they would be insulted.
With this perspective in mind, I rethink of the necessity of having my pocket picked for the “poor”. I rent, don’t own much and am saving up to buy land to build on. Now if I had all that I had earned that was taken by the goobermint for the poor, I would have a home.

I could get by without cable tv and don’t even know what X-box is but AC really is a necessity.
The house I grew up in had AC but we could have gotten by without it. The house was a frame one with high ceilings, large screened windows, and lots of huge old oak shade trees.
The last hurricane we had put the power out for 7 days and a lot of places it was 9. My generator would not operate the central AC but I went out and bought a small window unit which would run off the generator.
It cooled the bedroom enough so I could sleep other wise I may very well have died of heat stroke. I am in my 60’s and probably would have been OK when I was younger.
Well, I did fly a F-22 once.
Then i woke up in a bush in my neighbors yard covered in vomit.
Was it me?

Yep, nothing can tell you quicker if someone is poor in America quicker than looking at how fat they are, the fatter the poorer. That alone tells me everything I need to know about being poor in America.

The only thing unsustainable is the welfare state. Its fine for poor people to have these things, its not fine for tax dollars to be paying for them.
