He was scared, but the 12-year-old Boy Scout still knew what to do when he got lost during a Utah wilderness outing: He built a shelter made of tree branches and wood to get through a cold night and he covered himself in dirt to stay warm...

Thanks for posting.
The lad kept his head about him and used his Scout training.
Like you say, “thumbs up to the Boy Scouts.”

I’m glad to hear he put his training to use to save his life !
But I thought covering one’s self with dirt would lower body temperature ? I thought it just wicked it all away.

Stole it from some other FReeper years ago. Whenever I come across a Scouting thread, up it goes.

So nice when young men actually pay attention to their training and live to tell of the success. Scouts was one of the best experiences of my life. Making Eagle Scout in April 1972 was an important goal.

Don’t know what part of UT. this happened, the SlickRock country is very spotty though. By air miles it might not be all that far to a tower but the whole area is basically a maze of sandstone canyons within canyons and mesas. I managed to punch through from well into Canyonlands, I swear what made the difference after repeated failed connections was taking off my rubber flip-flops and “grounding” myself barefoot to the rock. $20 TracFone.

He’s not supposed to go out in the wilderness without a first aid kit, water and a whistle. But he still did well.
And a lot of places our troop goes, you can kiss your cell service goodbye.

When boy scout funding dried up from united way (they wanted gay leadership) Dave Packard wrote a check to cover the monterey scouts for a year. (Legend; I cannot confirm but that sounds like Dave)
