I’m the proud Mom of two Eagle Scouts. The best thing we ever did for our sons was involving them in Scouting. This boy is the nephew of my neighbor. We were praying all night he would be safe. The kid followed the rules, made shelter, stayed put and came out safely.
It is called Wilderness Survival MB. Any boy who wants to be an Eagle in our troop has to take this MB, along with Orienteering, Pioneering, and Cooking in addition to the BSA required MB’s to earn the rank.
That’s waht I love about Freepers. Our network is so big that nearly every story has a personal Freeper connection.
Glad he was well.
BTW, dad to Life and 2nd Class.
Well, you have to stick to your agenda - social 'justice', fairness etc. Never occurs to them that there might be other people in the world that regard their agenda as injustice and outrageous. (Since they are always outraged about something, they probably think they have outrage cornered too.)
“Be Prepared”. . .and he was
You done good nuke....I have a grandson just a couple of badges from Eagle, they are a couple of tough ones....explain the boost the eagle scout gets when he goes into the military...cannot remember exactly what my DIL said about it....
This is in the Uintah Mtns. The tallest range in UT, almost all non-motorized vehicle wilderness. It has swallowed a couple of other Boy Scouts without a trace in recent years.
It’s some of the most beautiful stuff in North America, but it’s not a safe little playground.
Maybe he can get credit for this towards the Order of the Arrow.

Gerald Ford was an Eagle Scout, IIRC, as was I.
A few years back in the Great Smoky Mountains NP a 5th grader summoned park rangers with a hand held HAM Radio. A classmate drowned at a water fall on a school field trip. The HAM as near the 144MHZ spctrum I think. A cell is 800HZ..
The smartest way to use a cell phone in limited reception area is texting. It takes a fraction of the time, conserves battery, and is far more likely to be picked up especially if several text are sent. Send any helpfull information such as I am near a creek, I see a nearby field {go to it if it can be reached safely}, and any other landmarks you see. Once that info is sent? Stay put. Panic kills by causing bad decessions and waste precious body energy.
True. Moving is a mistake unless there is a clear danger or you see a more visible area you can safely reach to make yourself more visible. But this was a 12 year old. I know grown ups who have paniced when lost.
When I used to take day long hikes I always packed a survival kit including several days food, water, lighter, poncho, dry clothes, and a quick and easy means for shelter.
There was a guy on my block who got lost in a forest preserve and barely managed to survive by using karate to catch a porcupine and a baraccuda.

Has got to be a strange story.
MacGyver!
Shelter, water, fire, food: are these in the right order?
Glad he made it out OK!
My normal campsite is about 15 miles inland, 8 miles after the last cell signal vanishes from my cell phone. Granted, I *might* be able to get a signal at the top of the hill after the turnoff with a bag phone, but my bagphone is long dead, and the hilltop is 9 miles from the campsite.
We are as isolated from civilization as the bears and cougar let us be...
Cell phones are a lifesaver, but only *IF* they can get a signal. Otherwise, they are nothing but wasted weight.
An Eagle Scout gets an automatic boost one grade when he graduates boot camp. Both of my Marines came out of boot camp as a PFC instead of a Private.
This reminds me of last deer season. One cold, frosty morning I was sitting in my tripod stand overlooking a clearing in the woods. After a while, boredom got the best of me so I started surfing FR on my smartphone. I finally looked up to see the really nice buck I have been after for quite a while standing in the clearing looking at me like "Anything interesting on there?"
Needless to say, he was gone before I could get situated for a shot.
I think that old boy probably really likes FR. LOL.
Hand held radios and/or GPS units.
I always carry pocketfulls of batteries.
thanks for the info....GG
