Generation Vexed: Young Americans rein in their dreams Amid so much economic uncertainty, many are rethinking career plans, putting off marriage and avoiding the stock market like the plague.

Alicia Thomas, 20, had it all planned out: career at a nonprofit, married by 24, mortgage by 26.
Then financial markets went on a wild roller-coaster ride, portending that high unemployment and the stalled economy won't be rebounding any time soon.
"I don't want to invest in something I can't afford, given the economy breaking down," said Thomas, who is majoring in political science at UC San Diego. "I'll be taking smaller steps."
Call it Generation Vexed — young Americans who are downsizing expectations in the face of an economic future that is anything but certain. Career plans are being altered, marriages put off and dreams shelved.
"You can't reach for the stars at this point," Thomas said.

It is this generation that voted big time for Obama and I believe they will continue to do so in 2012.

Marriages put off? What does the economy have to do with that, unless you want a big expensive wedding or are a gold digger looking for a rich mate as opposed to a spouse you love.
Career plans being altered...Isn't that true for all of us, even mid to late career? Just be glad you aren't close to retirement and your savings is being reduced.
Dreams Shelved...That's life.
Kids today need to stay positive. Set their goals extremely high. If they focus on the higher goals, they will go through all the other stuff without knowing it. Don’t let anyone tell them their goals are crazy. If you want to make $500,000 a year, look at every pay check and visualize it at $10,000. One thing for sure, if they take a production job and they set their sites on being the production lead person, that’s all they will be. Set the sites on running the company and believe you will get there. Keep that in focus and one day, you just might get there or at least most of the way.
The main thing is to stay positive, even with set-backs. There’s an old saying....”Take the cotton out of your ears and stuff it in your mouth.” Mouth shut, ears open. You may not like everything in a job, but shut up and learn until you are in command.
Shouldn’t have been such sheep in ‘08 voting for the Kenyan.
I foresee these same GenX spoiled brats joining in future street disturbances and riots in the U.S. if Obama is defeated at the polls.

What does this mean? And how can it be a "career"?
You know, one of those positions where she get’s to “do something” to help others, get a cushy salary, and never have any real duties or responsibility.

Career at a non profit...translation, some left leaning or environment wacko group leaching on the government and the public in general for their “funding”.
Married by 24...I did not know that a career dictated whether one got married...silly me.
Mortgage at 26...You have to be able to pay it back, age is not relevant.
Political science degree...that is a winner there.
Look at it this was honey, this is someone who I know pretty well:
Accounting/Finance degree at 21...ETS Army at 25...real job 2 weeks later in an earlier recession...GI Mortage at 30...not married till later and no children out of wedlock ever...It is called rational.
That's true, but the trends that have led to our economy going down the tubes have been in place much longer than Zero has been in the Oval Office.
