Radio bomb-tosser Jay Severin, fired from WTKK after he boasted of bedding a bevy of “mostly attractive young women” who worked for him, returns to the Boston airwaves on WXKS-AM Talk 1200 Thursday in his old afternoon-drive slot.
“I’m tremendously excited,” Severin told the Track. “Everybody wants to play for the hometown club, and these are the guys I listen to. To be a part of that team and that lineup is a tremendous opportunity and honor.”
Severin joins a roster that includes local yakker Jeff Katz in morning drive and syndicated talent Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity in the other day and evening timeslots.
“Jay will be a force to be reckoned with,” said Mary Menna, Clear Channel Radio president and market manager for Boston and Providence. “Jay has a proven track record as one of Boston’s top radio hosts for over a decade. We are fortunate to add him to the TALK 1200 team.”
Severin said he is champing at the bit to get back on the air with presidential politics heating up and with only one instruction from his new employers: Be yourself.
“That stands in profoundly stark contrast to the last set of directions I received,” he said.
Severin’s tenure at ’TKK was marked by controversy after the station signed him to a seven-year deal in 2006 that paid their once-top-rated talker more than $1 million a year. Then the economy tanked and a new ratings system kicked in that eroded Severin’s once-strong numbers and the long honeymoon was over.
In 2009, ’TKK suspended the afternoon yakker for a month after he made crude comments about Mexican immigrants. In April, Severin was suspended indefinitely, then ultimately fired, after he said on his show that when he owned his own company, he hired “mostly attractive young women” and had sex with nearly all of them.
“I slept with virtually every young college girl I hired to be an intern or an employee for my firm,” Severin said. “All I was was a young man who was the boss and I did it because I could.”
The comments were made while defending American Apparel chief Dov Charney, who was being sued for sexual harassment by a number of female ex-employees.
Severin’s agent George Tobia, who made the deal with WXKS-AM, said the new gig will free his client up to do “a Jay Severin show.”
“There appeared to be a format change at WTKK that was not conducive to Jay’s talent,” he said. “It seemed more of a ‘Good Morning America’ type format.”
Former FOX25 traffic reporter Doug Meehan, whose show has been far less controversial, replaced the sometimes-shock talker in ’TKK’s afternoon drive.
Neither Tobia nor Severin would discuss their previous vows to sue his former station for wrongful termination, but we’d say stay tuned on that one. For now, Severin said he’s just happy to be working again.
“In broadcasting everyone has rules to follow,” he said. “But the basis of our courtship and now marriage was based on one premise: We’d like you to come here and be yourself, in parenthesis, again.”

Katz is good but the programming of the show is awful - from 5-6a it's replays of past interviews, some even from the week before - from 6-10 I swear he's only "live" for about an hour - the rest of the time it's a relay of an interview from the first hour - for instance last week he interviewed Beck and an hour or so later he's replaying the interview prefaced by - "let's bring Glenn Beck into the mix" - today he had Joe Malone on - he's on every Tuesday - so tomorrow we will hear a replay of Joe Malone - he also interviewed Ron Paul today and now that I think of it he may have interviewed him live yesterday - but tomorrow we will hear a replay of Ron Paul again - he does not interact with callers like Todd and the felon - those two take more calls in an hour than Katz does all week. If they'd stop with the replays it would be more interesting and it would allow more time for callers and yes at some point during the morning he replays the callers as well - his show is dedicated to those who only listen for 15 minutes rather than those who listen a lot longer - it gets boring hearing the same interview/callers/ over and over again. I don't understand why he can't be live from 6-10 and then have a podcast on the website for those who missed the show. AND while we're at it, last nite at 11pm they were playing Sunday's weather forecast - how difficult is it to stay current on weather forecasts and I've mentioned before XKS is getting really bad with dead air.
I wonder how long J will last before he gets suspended? How long before he becomes obnoxious - 10, 15 minutes? LOL! The website will probably update late Wednesday nite or maybe Thursday morning - then we'll be able to see exactly who will be coming on after Hannity!
Yes they should change up the replays.
I do like Jeff’s voice but usually don’t have the chance to listen. It almost sounds like they’re doing what Imus did with all the replayed bits.
And yes the 1200 site will probably update just before the change.
I live in the area. I listen through the station’s own website via the internet while at work (no radio signals in our building). But thanks anyway for the info.
Just a note: the station should boost it’s signal. Often get static and other station bleed through when listening on the car radio.
Oh OK; btw I don’t think they could boost their signal. Actually they did—it was 10,000 watts or 25,000 but they boosted to 50,000 but a directional signal at night to protect other stations on or near 1200. They did what they could. I don’t think they could do anything more other than switch it to one of the FMs they own (Kiss 108, and Jam’n 94.5—both of which probably would NOT change)

Boston talk radio station WTKK is shaking up its on-air lineup as Jay Severin prepares to debut on rival talker WXKS-AM (1200).
The sudden switch pits Michael Graham against Severin (his former ‘TKK colleague) in afternoon-drive.
Starting tomorrow, Graham will be behind the mic from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on WTKK-FM (96.9). Graham, a Herald columnist, is currently heard from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ex-FOX 25 chopper reporter Doug Meehan, who replaced Severin, is losing two hours off his show and has been bumped to 10 a.m. to noon.
Severin’s 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. show rolls out Thursday. Severin was fired from WTKK in April after he went on the air and claimed to have had sex with throngs of former female workers.
“I’m offering the afternoon drive guarantee,” Graham said in a press release sent out today. “Let me ride home with you and you’ll know a little bit more and have more fun than any place else on the dial.”
Jim Braude and Margery Eagan will remain in morning-drive from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The syndicated Michael Smerconish will air from noon to 3 p.m.

Howie hates RKO. He would do an Internet only show rather than stay there.
True though the guy at Boston Radio Watch pointed out to me he’s probably better off staying at RKO and getting a good salary, etc., and being “king of the hill” there; I think he could still make a run at 96.9 or even 1200 (but that might mean they’d have to get rid of Jeff
Katz...they only have so much for salary).

And speaking of replays, XKS replayed the Ron Paul interview from yesterday again this morning around 7:25 or so. All you have to do it tune in one day a week from 5a to 10a to Jeff Katz and you’ll get caught up on everything for the week!
1200 - severin promos running every 20 - 30 minutes - had to shut it off - it’s absurd.
I don’t know what salary he’s getting but they want bang for their buck.
Hearing the promo for this pig every 20 - 30 minutes is beyond annoying - they are making him soundlike the second coming! They go thru a list of things that have been banned in Boston at one time or another including Christmas and then end it with something like - but look who’s NOT banned in Boston ANYMORE - join us TODAY from 3 to 6 for Jay Severin - bla bla bla - I have no intention of listening to this fool!

Listening for a few minutes (gotta admit voice better than the Col. or Graham) and so far it seems like a “welcome back!” type deal. He only talks to them for a couple minutes and it’s just “welcome back”, nothing about the prez race
or anything. A couple said they were unaware the station existed—was wondering if they were setup calls. A relative of a Clear Channel worker being told to call in and say that?
One even called him “Agent 1200”. You may remember back when Howie was only on RKO, or only on a couple stations, he was called “Agent 680”
You have it right about him thanking vets or servicemen (though it’s a nice thought) and other stuff he says.
