Ohio Business Owner Shot For Being Non-Union, Police Investigating
Redstate.com ^

With around 25 employees, John King owns one of the largest non-union electrical contracting businesses in the Toledo, Ohio area. As a non-union contractor, his business happens to be doing well at a time when unions in the construction industry are suffering. This, it seems, has made the usual animosity unions have for him even greater, making him a prime target of union thugs. So much so, that one of them tried to kill him last week at his home.

John King didn’t plan on being an enemy of unions. In fact, he says all he’s ever wanted to do is work at something he loves doing and be successful at it—something that most normal Americans would call ‘The American Dream.’

After high school and some college, Mr. King briefly worked for an IBEW contractor before being drafted into the military. Following his service in the early 70s, King became his own boss by going into business as the youngest electrical contractor in Toledo.

Over the years, King Electrical Services had always been a small business. However, during the Great Recession, King’s business has actually improved as his union competitors have priced themselves out of work.

Unfortunately, being a non-union electrical company, King has always been on the radar of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). In fact, in 2006, he won a significant case against the IBEW at the US Court of Appeals, after the union had improperly promised his electricians jobs on union sites if they voted the union into King’s company.

I couldn’t agree more.

Unions are criminal organizations for the propose of extortion and thief. By all rights they should be in jail.

But your also right in a free country they could exist if there was a true monopoly and an no willing workforce.

After all an employee can’t fire an employee unless that employer can find someone else willing & able to do the same job under the same terms.

It’s hard to believe that Ohio and Michigan actually fought over Toledo. I always like to joke that Ohio lost and got stuck with Toledo.

After all an employee can’t fire an employee unless that employer can find someone else willing & able to do the same job under the same terms.

On the other hand, an employee won't stay in the union for long if this disqualifies him from all jobs. It may be my right to wear a KKK robe and go to interviews (I don't really know if it is legal or not) but it would be mighty stupid and won't land me any jobs.

If I am the business owner and my policy is not to hire union goons I simply will hire contractors or outsource the job to someone who does it right. The golden rule is in effect ("He who has gold sets the rules.")

The "same terms" is not a required condition. Often same terms are no longer available. Can you buy a gallon of milk for 10 cents? I guess that was the price 100 years ago. But those "same terms" are long gone. Every new day brings new problems. If the local labor becomes too expensive you look for other labor. Giving in is not an option for a small business because too much is personally invested. A large company, full of managers who personally don't care one way or another, can collectively sell its soul to the Devil, as long as it is "convenient" at the moment.

Then why should we be surprised if thousands of business managers escaped the union-ridden, red-tape-entangled, drowning in taxes USA altogether? There are plenty of countries in the world where you can open up a shop and not be looked at as an enemy of the people; where every worker has a right and responsibility to sell (or not to sell) his labor at the personally negotiated rate, and enter and leave this contract as mutually agreed.

When I was 19, I was in the IBEW for about 3 months. Being in Texas, it wasn’t vicious, but the union definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

Later, my dad told me about how, when he was a child living in Penn, the union at the plant my grandfather managed shot up their house during a contract dispute. Fortunately they weren’t home that evening. To make matters worse, my grandfather was just an operations manager and had no say in the on-going negotiations.

Needless to say, I’m not a big fan of Big Labor.

What's any local Freeper’s opinion on the police? Are they unionized and will they really help try and catch the shooter or will they cover for their union brothers?

A Sneak Attack By Militant Labor (WI Dem tells GOP rep. “you’re F’n dead”)

Typical Americans, including the blue-collar brand, aren’t fans of threats and violence coming from government union mobs. In Wisconsin, it’s Democratic state Rep. Gordon Hintz telling GOP Rep. Michelle Litjens, “You are [expletive] dead” after she voted for Gov. Scott Walker’s budget.

Here in Massachusetts, it’s Gov. Deval Patrick’s director of the Department of Labor: “Make no mistake about it,” George Noel said Saturday, “we are at war!”

And if the tax-getters are at war, who are they at war with? Tax-payers, obviously.
