US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Tuesday against budget cuts that could force an abrupt pullout of the US security presence in the Pacific at a time when China's power is rising.
The debate over reducing the US debt "does cast a pall over our ability to project the kind of security interests that are in America's interests," Clinton told officers at the National Defense University.
"We need to have a responsible conversation about how we are going to prepare ourselves for the future and there are a lot of issues that are not in the headlines but are in the trendlines," she said.
"We are asserting our presence in the Pacific. We are a Pacific power. That means all elements of our national security team have to be present," the chief US diplomat said in a conversation with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
The deal signed into law by Obama on August 2 calls for at least $2.1 trillion in cuts in government spending over 10 years.
The White House said military spending will fall by $350 billion in the first round of $917 billion in cuts, in line with Pentagon expectations.
A special congressional committee has been created to come up with a second round of $1.5 trillion in further cuts from all areas.
But if the bipartisan committee fails, then cuts of $1.2 trillion would automatically come into force -- divided evenly between military and non-military spending.

Plus tax hikes?
I don't care if it is masked as a panel of 6 putting the hammer down, 0bama is toast if this happens!
STFU you wrinkled wh0re for satan.
LLS
WTG Boehner, helluva deal you worked out there. Completely flipped the advantage to the RATs. And look at that stuper committee.
I hate to admit this (and I know I will get flamed) but Hillary has been a pretty good sec of state. She is certainly more competent and looks out after the US’s interests than her boss!
She's as bad as Obama.
If she’d run against McCain I could have voted for her. Of all the things she is she isn’t crazy like McCain and she likes wealth and wealthy people.
Sometimes the best choice is a bad choice. Voting for her if she had run in 08 would have been such a choice.
At least she had the courage to speak the truth about national security and China.
If Barak makes that happen, his “Arab Spring” strategy is going in the toilet.
All the left has to do is not cooperate with Republican-Republicans to balance the budget and they get their way in cutting the military. If we don’t want cuts falling to the military, then we have to obey leftist tax increase dictates. Rinos designed the plan this way. The “super congress” is treason.
That face would force a dog off of a gut wagon.
Hell the pentagon, just pissed away another 500++ million on the F35 and the few built are all grounded because they do not work.
My dirty little secret: I voted for Hillary in the NC Dem primary in 2008 against O. Part to support Rush’s Operation Chaos, part because I felt she would be easier to beat in the general election and part because I thought she would be a better president.
Truth be told, you are right, she would have been better than either of the two choices we had on the ballot (I still would have voted for Palin).
The thing about the Clintons is that they have no political philosophy. They support whatever is best for them. Because we are a center right country, that works for me!
Hillary Clinton is worried about defense cuts? The devil must be looking for a parka because hell just froze over. Maybe the Marines will take her now. Naw.......
