New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, according to a government report on Thursday that suggested hiring in August was steady but not robust.

Meanwhile, the Labor Department says the Consumer Price Index rose 0.5 percent in July, following a drop of 0.2 percent in June. Gas prices accounted for much of the swing. Prices increased by a seasonally adjusted 4.7 percent, after falling sharply in June.

The core index, which excludes volatile food and energy, rose 0.2 percent. That's below the 0.3 percent rise in each of the previous two months.

Prices are 3.6 percent higher than they were a year ago, matching the 12-month increase in May and June. Core prices are 1.8 percent higher than they were a year earlier, the largest increase in two years.

Meanwhile, initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 408,000, the Labor Department said.

409,000 is far above the steady state of 250-300 thousand from the GWBush era...or even the WJClinton era.

Obama is failing miserably at jobs.

They hate us for our freedoms. The USA is a force of good, helping spread democracy.

Right or left, warfare or welfare, both parties benefit from an ever growing centralized state. Politicians trick voters with promises (a la Lucy & Charlie B), but when they get to DC, they quickly assume the position: hands out to rake in as much filthy lucre as possible before they have to run for office once again. Rinse, wash, repeat, and you have the formula for America's decline and eventual demise.

Not to nit-pick Dear Leader, but does anyone else have a problem with a sitting president always seeming to have some type of alcoholic beverage in his hand? Is the guy a closet-drunk along with being a chain/pole smoker and a Marxist?

At this point, Her Royal Fat-assed Headcase in the White House would be good news!

Remember that first med report after he took office? His doctor told him to cut back on the drinking. So... its back to coke and oral sex in the back of limos!

The prior week's figure was revised up to 399,000 from the previously reported 395,000.

Statistics are fun!

I’m stunned, I tell you, stunned! I can’t believe you’ve already managed to get a leaked copy of Obama’s “new ideas” September plan with that much detail in it! All I can say is, you must have one hell of an inside source!

We're in trouble.

At the most senior levels of our government we have children at play. Well dressed and spoken children with real big ego's, but nonetheless, children.

In the arts we sometimes romanticize about children ruling the world, now we see what that brings.

True,

The nature of government is to grow government, may that be the left or right.
