Americans would rather see the U.S. Postal Service dramatically cut its workforce and reduce mail delivery to three or four days a week than have the government pour more money into the financially struggling agency.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 50% of American Adults believe the federal government should allow the Postal Service to lay off the estimated 120,000 workers it needs to reduce its current losses rather than provide the agency with additional subsidies to cover those losses. Thirty-three percent (33%) think the government should provide subsidies to cover the agency’s losses, estimated at $8 billion last year. Another 17% are undecided what's best. Even more Americans (75%) would rather see the USPS cut back mail delivery in some parts of the country to three or four days a week rather than for the government to cover those losses. Only 17% would rather see the government provide more subsidies instead of cutting back delivery.
Support for reduced service is up from late July 2009, when 50% favored cutting back mail delivery over government subsidies for the agency. But at that time, the question did not specify how many days of service were to be cut.

With the performance I’ve seen lately, I thought service had already been cut.
Yep. I’d like to see Saturday delivery go bye-bye. I live in a very rural community of less than 500 people. Some how, we have a post office AND mail delivery. It makes no sense to have both in small communities like these.
I read somewhere that the Postmaster General makes like a bazillion dollars a year.
The Post Office will never be efficient enough to turn a profit or even break even.
All I get are bills and junk mail anyway, so I wouldn’t miss it.
IF AND ONLY IF it involves firing thousands of postal “workers” to cut costs as well.
You don’t have to cut “delivery” “services” or “programs” That’s a straw man. Just control headcount. Cut employees, salaries and benefits. Ever been behind the scenes at a major USPS? Lots of em just sittin around shootin the breeze.
Oh yeah, and outsource alot of USPS stuff.

All I ever get is junk mail. They can cut Saturday delivery without a problem at my house. In fact, I wouldn’t have a problem voluntarily going to 3 day a week delivery at my house.
We went to Ohio last week. Stopped delivery for 6 days. When we got back, there was nothing but ads and catalogs.
Thank you. I had heard as high as 300 million. Which seems insane, but perhaps “evolved” from the 3 mil. figure quoted.
In my area, there is no home delivery. I go to the post office to check my box 2-3 times per week. I have managed to survive this way for seven years.
Seriously up the junk mail cost! No more “or current resident” crap.
My husband is the fire inspector for our city. When he has to do the yearly post office fire drills, he has to schedule them at certain times because of the workers’ union contract. The last twenty minutes of each shift they cannot do anything, nor can a supervisor order them to do anything. They just hang out and get paid for it.
People having their mail stolen from their mailboxes is a big problem.
Saturday should definitely be scrubbed - you need something on Saturday - pay for it - FedEx
Maybe also set up post offices like public schools - set a radius, if your house is within the circle, you are classified as a walker, you can’t ride the bus (get delivery)—with ADA waivers-of course - because the ADA would have a hissy fit.
Once someone retires - don’t rehire - shift people around and no layoffs are needed. (private businesses have been doing this for years - cuts into union dues- but, oh well:)
Treat Post Office just like any other spammer, the deliver more junk than I could possibly read.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't be a good idea, but it certainly isn't a cure for the Post Office's long term problems. Those run much deeper than reducing a few mailmen to five days a week.
