Congressional Republicans are worried that Rick Perry's campaign has become a gaffe machine that may endanger the party' chances of unseating President Barack Obama, POLITICO reports.
As the Texas governor takes on the role of front-runner, his statements, like the one critical of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, have GOP lawmakers concerned that his campaign will self-destruct or worse, win the nomination, but alienate the independent voters needed to win the general election.
You cant be calling Bernanke a traitor and you cant be questioning whether or not Barack Obama loves America, that type of thing, Rep. Peter King (R-NY), told POLITICO. Ive been with Perry a few times, and I can see how he could project, again, if its done the right way. But no, if he continues this, hell have a tough time.
Another congressmen suggested Perry needs to rethink his strategy so as not to alienate independent voters. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), a member of the GOP leadership said of the Bernanke comments: Thats not something you want to lead with if youre trying to get independents to come your way. I would imagine that hes thinking through his strategy.

Republican elites who really want Huntsman are worried. No one else.
I see the Romney bots in the GOP Establishment are out following Romney campaign SOP. They go out and trash talk the opposition for Romney while he postures as “above the fray”.
That’s exactly who he’ll appeal to...even the GOP elite are scared of him...wonder why?
I’ve been on vacation - has Perry passed Romney as the frontrunner?
Fixed the headline.
Is RomneyCARE worried?
Sending out his minions, again?
NO RINOs.
NO ROMNEYCare
NO OBAMACare
He doesn’t appeal to this Republican.
I’m really sick and tired of all the hand-wringing going on about the so-called independent and moderate voters. If they can’t bring themselves to vote for the GOP candidate, then they’ll probably stay home on election day. The GOP should just ignore them and stick with its Conservative base instead of repeatedly trying to screw it over.
The usual suspects are out trying to derail Perry.
Rasmussen 8/15
Perry 29
Romney 18
Buchmann 13
Paul 9
I’m worried and I don’t want Huntsman or Romney or.....
RE: Ive been on vacation - has Perry passed Romney as the frontrunner?
latest Rasmuusen Poll had it at Perry 29, Romney 18 and Bachmann 13.
See here :
The GOP leadership is afraid Perry might knock off their RINO pal Mitt Romney, and we all know “it’s Mitt’s turn.
Like it was McCain’s turn and Doles turn.
Like it was Boehner’s turn. See what waiting your turn does for you?
The press is worried that Perry’s style WILL appeal to “moderates” and “independents”. They are worried that Perry’s hard hitting, provocative statements are exactly what the anti-Obama, anti-Democrat voters are hungering for.
Who wants or needs squishy one-issue voters deciding our next President.
Gave them McCain last time.
Been there, done that
“independents” are not the sharpest tools in the box
They are swayed by emotion, image, propaganda ads, and innuendo and probably don't decide who to vote for until the day of the election
If they can't see a difference or won't make a choice between a Rick Perry and a Barry obama- screw them
They are probably obama voters or passive lemmings
ROVE and BUSH worried is more like it. Screw them. They helped destroy the GOP with their Compassionate Conservatism.
Zowie. If Palin bombs, we could do a lot worse than Perry. From what I can tell, he’s a good guy. And the more the Libs hate him, the more I like him
The should worry that Tea Partiers won’t turn out for Romney.
As bad as Obama is, if the GOP nominates McCain version 2.0 a significant percentage of Tea Pariters just won’t vote for him this time around.
