Matthews Panel (5 lefties): Mitt Romney Will Be The Nominee Because Rick Perry ‘Unelectable’
Mediaite ^ | August 8, 2011 | Tommy Christopher

Despite an instant, commanding lead in the polls, newly-minted GOP presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry is already being viewed as “unelectable.” The panel of reporters on Sunday’s The Chris Matthews Show reached a general consensus that Perry’s loose talk and extreme views will eventually lead the Republican establishment to choose the more moderate, more electable Mitt Romney to challenge President Obama in the general election.

Barely a week into his campaign, the Texas Governor has talked himself into trouble, and not just with liberals and Democrats. While John Heilemann sees Perry’s smashmouth certitude as an advantage over Mitt Romney, The New York Times‘ Helene Cooper points out that, eventually, Republicans are going to have to think about beating Barack Obama, not each other. In perhaps the best piece of news for Romney, Cooper says that he is still the candidate that the White House is most worried about.

It’s official. My 5 buddies from church (previously we couldn’t agree on anyone) are all for Rick Perry. Palin needs to do her duty or get out of the outhouse. Perry/Bachman 2012 Take Liberty Back.

Nope, I don’t believe for a minute that Perry is anything like GW. Perry may not be as conservative as some here would like, no one is , but he is far to the right of GW.

I can’t wait to see the VP debate with the Perry/Palin team when the curve ball question is asked of Sara, well, why did you quit.” Well, at least I’m not a political hack like this guy,” and turn to Joe & ask, How long have you been collecting a sweet government check? 50 years? And you still have no solutions. Here’s the new saying Joe: “Joe you gotta go.”

Newt’s been saying that? I’ve been trying to make the same point here too. This is something I posted to Freeper shield a few days ago, but I would address it to anyone:

“...I could live with a president Perry and a Tea Party Congress. A Tea Party Congress will keep his feet to the fire, and Perry has shown that he will respond if his constituents raise enough Hell...Many on this site have become myopically obssessed with the federal presidency. Although this office is [clearly] important, our top priority has to be to elect as many Tea Party candidates to as many offices as possible. This is our best chance influence events. My motto for coming elections: when possible, VOTE HOBBIT!!”

Having followed the Perry/Palin/other threads over the last few days—and I say this as a long-time Freeper and contributor—I’ve been disheartened by the wretched and at times abysmal level of discussion and commentary. I think we can all agree that we MUST support and promote the ascendancy of the Tea Party at ALL levels of government. Whoever one supports for the nomination (I’m inclining towards Perry at the moment), we shouldn’t forget the overall goal. It’s not just about defeating Obama. It’s about promoting the restoration of constitutional governance everywhere it’s still possible. At this time that means supporting Tea Party candidates wherever this is feasible.

Sorry if this sounds preachy.

It really boils down to about twelve states, we know which way the others will go. My gut feeling now is that marginal northern states like Wisconsin and New Hampshire will go to the GOP. The productive class in NH is motivated to vote against Obama and the recent supreme court election in Wisconsin does not bode well for him either. I suspect the GOP will again have a solid south at a time when they just picked up even more electoral votes.

Whoever will be Republican nominee will be electable

Especially if GOP state houses pass enough eligibility verification laws that Obama can't get 270 EVs.
