FLASHBACK--George W. Bush Gives Up Golf: ‘Playing Golf During a War Sends Wrong Message’ Monday, August 22, 2011 By Penny Starr

(CNSNews.com) – The White House has released some information about President Barack Obama’s vacation on Massachusetts’ upscale Martha’s Vineyard including his golf games, but no open press coverage of his time on the links has been allowed.

President George W. Bush, who routinely allowed journalists to accompany him on golf outings early in his presidency, told Politico in May 2008 that he decided to give up the game in August 2003 after a bomb attack on the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad that killed a top U.N. official.

“I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf,” Bush said. “I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them.”

“And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong message,” Bush said.

On Monday, Obama spoke about the recent developments in Libya from Martha’s Vineyard.

Bush said in the Politico interview that he had been golfing when he was informed about the deadly attack on the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad.

“I remember (Sergio Vieira) de Mello, who was at the U.N., got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man’s life,” Bush said in the interview. “I was paying golf--I think I was in central Texas--and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, ‘It’s just not worth doing this anymore.’”

I came across one of the late-night shows a few days ago. The host compared recent Presidents and how many vacation days each took. He said that Bush had far more vacation days than Obama (the crowd mocked at Bush's name). The punch line was that Clinton had the fewest days but “we all know why he liked to be in the Oval Office.”

I wished President G.W. Bush was still POTUS. I know that most of my fellow Freepers don’t agree.

I heard that “fact check” by I think media Matters (Soros?). Totally misleading and therefore a lie. Clinton stayed in WH because he did not have a home. He always lived in gov’t housing. Next Dubya made his own place in Crawford a westenr WH. Not on vacation. And he did not cost the US taxpayers a fortune with all his lavish vacations to expensive resorts and have a huge entourage. Bambi is a goldbrick (don’t mean that as a compliment)

Not all Freepers.

President Bush had class. Something this regime know nothing about.

When he did vacation, he didn’t cost the taxpayers and their future generations millions to do it.

What they never seem to say is that Pres. Bush usually took his 'vacations' at his ranch, and ALWAYS conducted business while he was there. He didn't swan around the tony vacation spots like both Clinton and Obama, neither of whom seemed to have their own homes to go to, when they were on 'breaks' from the White House.

I’m about half way through “Decision Points”. At first I wasn’t sure about it. The short & direct style of writing took a little getting used to, but I am really enjoying it. He packs a lot into a few words. The part about not playing golf while soldiers were dying stuck with me. Give the book a try, you won’t be sorry.

Well, hindsight and present circumstances and all...W might have more forgiving admirers than he did a few short odd years ago.

AMEN to your whole post. Decision Points is a fantastic book. I think for me it deeply confirmed what I already felt and knew about Dubya.
He has more class in one of his hair folicles than Buck Ofama has in his whole body~ and I neer questioned his love for our country, nor for our Troops ~

Yes, we Miss You Dubya ~

I could not agree with all of George W’s policies, but I NEVER questioned his integrity or patriotism. Wish I could say the same about 0.

Bush spent, most, if not all of his vacation time in Crawford. The Secret Service knew the area, what to expect, etc. Every time Bambi goes on one of his vacations it is always some tourist trap which requires a lot more planning and staff, unlike Bush at his Crawford ranch. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was partially done to keep costs down to some extent.

I wouldn’t either. Politics and image aside, it’s one thing to be CEO and take these vacations with your hard earned money, and to be an elected official being profligate with the people’s money.

Bush saw that. He also ate pbj sammies at the WH.

Late to the thread but I wanted you to know that I miss the years of the Presidential G.W.Bush as well. He is a man of honor and besides his faults; I'm convinced that he had our best interests at heart throughout his presidency.

I cannot say that of all.

God Bless our leaders
