Policy Chart: Illinois Loses Most Jobs in the Nation
Illinois Policy Institute ^ | Aug 19, 2011 | Staff

In a trend that continues to worsen, more Illinoisans found themselves unemployed in the month of July.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover. But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year. Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline.

Data released today by the bureau confirms this downward trajectory. When it comes to putting people back to work, Illinois is going backwards. Since January, Illinois has dropped 89,000 people from its employment rolls.

I’d blame the realization by many of the costs of OBAMACARE, as well as the Illinois tax hikes.

The Income Tax hikes are driving out small business, while Obamacare is killing both large AND small businesses.

On the bright side, Indiana does thank you for the jobs fleeing Illinois.

Obama is so ruinous for his constituents, the damage he does continues to worsen long after he leaves.

If we can beat him in 2012, it will take many years to reverse his damage to the nation.

The Illinois Income Tax hikes are driving us into the ground. They went from 3% to 5% of gross income. If you think of this as a tax on your post Federal Income Tax income, that's like a hike from 5% to 8%. With sales taxes and property taxes, you start to see the door closing.

2010 census info says 12.83 million people in Illinois.

Less than half work? WTH? Half the damn state aren’t children. This is totally messed up.

Cutting taxes on business would allow more money to go for hiring and business growth. Tax hikes TAKE money and give it to government, not to people. Tax hikes do NOT actually raise revenue because they slow economic performance, slowing taxable profits. When will they learn?

Not true. It will take about six months for the congress to reverse Obamacare and ditch the overburdensome EPA regulations. However, as this process promises to move forward, the stock market will skyrocket. Business will invest the trillions of dollars now sitting on the sideline and within two years, unemployment will be back around 6%.

The sad note to this is that many Illinois residents outside the big cities are much more conservative.

The big cities decide what political persuasion prevails.

I wonder if Ben Stein has seen that chart...he has been claiming that there is no affect on employment or growth with tax hikes (for the wealthy).

When Obama and the liberals talk about increasing taxes to assuage the deficit, just point to Illinois as the example.

What’s worse than high taxes? A combination of high taxes, powerful unions, and the mob.
