Let Wyoming be what Wyoming is

I want to thank the Casper Journal for publishing the article by Greg Fladager outlining the Casper City Council’s proposed ban of open carry in their public meetings. I have a few comments regarding the proposed ban.

During the City Council’s working meeting Aug. 8, acting Casper Chief of Police Chris Walsh stated that there haven’t been any incidents caused by a citizen legally carrying a sidearm in any city meetings here, but that there might be someday. None of the city council members could remember a time that a concealed or open carry weapon created a problem. The discussion by the city council was all about “what if.”

After the working meeting, I asked one of our city council members what the number one desired outcome would be if someone did draw a firearm at a meeting. The councilman agreed that surviving the situation would be number one. When I asked how an ordinance written on a piece of paper would save lives, there was no answer.

If the city council determines that a gun-free policy at city meetings is needed, how are they going to guarantee that the room will indeed be gun free? Who will pay for the metal detectors and additional armed guards to enforce the new law and guarantee the room to be free of guns?

I challenge the Casper Star-Tribune editorial board to use some common sense and re-evaluate their liberal view of gun control. Gun-free zones don’t stop criminal shootings in those zones. Cokeville, Columbine High School, Virginia Tech and numerous other gun-free zone tragedies are proof that laws don’t prevent shootings in gun-free zones. The shootings in Colorado Springs that started at Youth With A Mission and continued to New Life Church ended because an armed guard shot the shooter,

I agree. He was wrong in one aspect of his editorial, however. Wyoming won’t have riots because the vast majority of Wyoming citizens do not have an entitlement mentality and they have few africans.

And someday a meteor might hit the earth, but I don’t think we should start moving our cities underground.......

“additional armed guards to enforce the new law and guarantee the room to be free of guns?”

The ARMED guards would keep the room free of guns???

Another well-intentioned group that wants to restrict liberties “just in case”. There is enough actual data out there to make informed decisions on gun restrictions. They don’t need to postulate “what if” situations.
