I took them (zocor) for about 3 months and had total cholesterol levels of < 135, downside was that I would fall while walking for no apparent reason. I stopped taking zocor and now take 2 grams niacin and about 8.5 grams fish oil daily. Never felt better, cholesterol levels <185 and HDL levels have almost doubled. Been doing this for 3 years, and I haven’t fell once.

I had my bloodwork done January of this year. In April, after reading Gary Taubes' book, How We Get Fat, my husband and I went back to an Atkins style diet. Eggs, meat, fish, cheese, non-starchy vegetables. No flour or sugar. I have lost 26 pounds.

Two weeks ago, I went to have my blood work done again and my LDL number had dropped by 30 points. All of my numbers had dropped. I am healthier, and I actually feel a lot better. My stomach problems have reduced tremendously.

I had tried Atkins before, and had lost a lot of weight. But, when I tried bringing back the foods like rice or potatoes, I ended up gaining all the weight back, and then some. Taubes' book helped me understand how my body works and it explained a lot about how my body reacts to certain foods (or, really, over-reacts). I believe that this may be the way I have to eat for the rest of my life.

I don't think doctors or researchers really take into account the fact that people are different. For some, one diet may work, for others, another type of diet may be better.

Another book, if you haven’t already read it, is Gary Taubes’ “How We Get Fat”.

I did not completely understand this or the fat ratio recommendation until I read The Modern Nutritional Diseases work. It would be hilarious if it was not so tragic, that the recommended "heart healthy" diet centers around all of the neolithic agents of disease.

This is not new information and if anyone wants large sample the largest dietary study ever conducted was done so in China.

Read about it here: http://www.thechinastudy.com/

I became Vegan about six months ago now and feel better than I have felt in a couple of decades...

In that connection, regular flossing and good oral hygiene help too.

Chronic infection below or at the gumline results in inflammation just as with any other injury.

For example see here.

Cheers!

ctdonath2, null_and_void, decimon, PA Engineer, Libertarian Liz,

Can you comment?

I've combined Atkins and cardio (600 calories worth a day) and weight lifting 5 or six days a week.

I've dropped 20 or 22 lbs. since the Minnesota MS 150 ride in June.

Aiming for 200 as an initial goal, then stretch goal of 190 or 195.

It seems that my weight comes off in steps or plateaus: with each one, I level off, then *suddenly* I lose 3-5 pounds in a week. Almost as though each stratum of fat acts as ablative shielding against weight loss ;-)

Cheers!

When I first started Atkins I noticed periods of sudden weight loss and plateaus. At the time I was pretty heavy training in Masters Swimming. Some of the perceived plateaus may have been development of muscle mass. I remember having issues with the technical suit in my arms and chest. Atkins did mention that there would be weight loss and plateaus.

I'm on my last 8lbs and have intentionally slowed down the weight loss to about .5lbs per week. I weigh myself more now than before. Before I was trying not to gain weight. Now I'm trying to control the remaining loss. I will not be taking swimming back up again until October. Managed to aggravate an old plexus injury and am heeding the Dr's advice on this one. I probably will plateau and add weight after I start exercising again.

I am still amazed how easy it is to forget to eat. Congratulations on the weight loss. For me it was definitely a Red Pill and Blue Pill moment to go very low carb. The "journey down the rabbit hole" has been an eye opener in regards to conventional wisdom, "heart healthy diet", modern medicine and government interference. The war against fat is going to cause more suffering and kill more people than Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot and Mao combined.

“I use an extended release form that you can get over the counter from Endurance Products. Found it as a result of a book I read by Robert Kowalski. I had no flushing and it has kept my cholesterol in check without the side effects I was having from a statin.”

Be very careful with extended release niacin. Check the research. All of the liver damage found from niacin has been from extended release niacin. The results I read a few years ago were plenty persuasive that I prefer to endure the flush.
