MADRID, SPAIN, August 23, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – When it comes to finding information on vital issues like abortion, same-sex “marriage,” and faith, the mainstream media simply can’t be trusted, the incoming archbishop of Philadelphia told a group of youth in Spain last week.
“Being uninformed about the world and its problems and issues is a sin against our vocation as disciple,” Archbishop Charles Chaput told his audience during a special World Youth Day session in Madrid. And yet, he went on to note, the Christian believer is faced with a unique challenge in finding accurate sources of information on key issues.
“In the United States, our battles over abortion, family life, same-sex marriage, and other sensitive issues have led to ferocious public smears and legal threats not only of Catholics, but also against Mormons, evangelicals, and other religious believers,” he said.
“And with relatively few exceptions, the mass media tend to cover these disputed issues with a combination of ignorance, laziness, and bias against traditional Christian belief.”
The archbishop said that Christians “make a very serious mistake” if they turned to outlets like the New York Times, Newsweek, CNN and MSNBC, “for reliable news about religion.”

Too many Christians are being deceived by the News Media.
We need more Christian leaders to echo/say this message...

People go to the PAGAN MEDIA for their religion.

Even when they are caught red handed they never any big deal about correction. They know that their steady audience isn't going anywhere.
Liars lie. They don't just lie about abortion, gay "marriage," or matters of faith. They lie. Period.
The sooner the Episcopate catches on to this, the better.
I doubt that the good archbishop has much problem with the rest of the socialist & redistibutionalist agenda of the MSM.
On those particular topics there might be a disconnect. But I have no use for a church which is otherwise nearly as leftist as Rev Wright’s.
Now if only the rest of the liberal Catholic hierarchy would show as much gumption in regards to the secularization, in fact the anti-Christian attitudes, of the country by the media.
Likewise, we need more leaders of other Christian churches speaking out too. Mostly we hear this type of talk only from conservative evangelical leaders or a handful of traditional Catholic clergy.
If Christians would stick together on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, etc., none of this cultural destruction in our country would have taken place. The fact is, we could still change it if everyone stood together. It is a sad fact that about 50% of folks who claim to be Christian are only saying it because their paretns belonged to a Christian denomination - or because they want to join the social justice bandwagon. These people have no personal knowledge of Jesus Christ or his mission, his sacrifice on the cross, or his resurrection, and the promises he made to those who believe and follow him.
He really makes the most of his platforms, doesn’t he. Godspeed, Arch.
The Catholic church has a fault line of its own and so an earthquake is imminent. On one side is what one very important priest I know called "the gay left."
Rather than guessing, you might try reading, instead of branding him liberal.

Since then, we had sick and twisted cultural Marxists like the sodomite Herbert Marcuse and Bill (Smash monogamy) Ayers writing the curricula and teaching, shaping the little minds into their perversity of no morality.
The children grow up devoid of morality—no right and wrong which used to be the mainstay in the McGuffey Readers—God made you and the world, etc. and it is good to care for it...etc.—
No morality leads to a society of unfettered promiscuity, illiteracy, abortions, homosexuality, orgies, pederasty—etc. People exactly like the English who are burning London down—they were bathed in the paganism/atheism/Marxism/homosexual occultism/socialism for half a century or longer.

I wish he would say the mainstream culture of the United States is incompatible with Catholicism; maybe then the Dems would stop carrying the “Catholic” states in every election.
Mike-zed has a good point, and G Larry recommends Abp. Chaput’s book. From a book review, Chaput relies on John Courtney Murray, who was a liberal. The review doesn’t say whether Chaput condones redistribution of wealth, however. And that is the central issue.
Popes Pius IX, Leo XIII, and Pius XI unequivocally condemned socialism. In particular, they condemned taking money from one person to give it to another, i.e., redistribution of wealth. The USCCB has always come down firmly on the side of redistribution, and I don’t recall Chaput speaking out against that.
Abp. Chaput is quite liberal in his condemnation of the death penalty, and this makes me nervous about him. What else I’ve seen of him is good, however.
Folks need to understand that the USCCB has basically zero teaching authority. Canon law gives national bishops' conferences authority in certain very defined, narrow, areas of competence, mainly concerning things that need to be legislated on a national basis, like liturgical translations. Aside from that, they're basically a bureaucracy that generates words.
An individual bishop doesn't need to comment on every pronouncement or opinion of the USCCB for the simple reason that his authority is superior to that of the USCCB within the bounds of his diocese.
Quite true. However, impressions are different. It would help a lot if some bishops would speak out against the USCCB. But they don't, almost as a rule.
When the then-NCCB was headed by flaming homosexual Cardinal Bernadin, the bishops all went along with "seamless garment" baby-killing, "social justice" socialism, and communist disarmament, too. If only a Chaput would break ranks.
