Libya: SAS leads hunt for Gaddafi
Telegraph ^ | 9:19PM BST 24 Aug 2011 | Thomas Harding, Gordon Rayner and Damien McElroy in Tripoli

British special forces are on the ground in Libya helping to spearhead the hunt for Col Muammar Gaddafi, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

As a £1 million bounty was placed on Gaddafi’s head, soldiers from 22 SAS Regiment began guiding rebel soldiers after being ordered in by David Cameron.

For the first time, defence sources have confirmed that the SAS has been in Libya for several weeks, and played a key role in co-ordinating the fall of Tripoli.

With the majority of the capital now in rebel hands, the SAS soldiers, who have been dressed in Arab civilian clothing and carrying the same weapons as the rebels, have been ordered to switch their focus to the search for Gaddafi, who has been on the run since his fortified headquarters was captured on Tuesday.

Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) said Gaddafi was wanted “dead or alive” and promised an amnesty to any of his inner circle prepared to betray his whereabouts.

Nato still has no idea where the despot is holed up, and yesterday he taunted his opponents by claiming in a TV interview that he had secretly toured the streets of Tripoli without being spotted.

All part of the Civilian Protection No Fly Zone. NATO is acting as the enforcement arm of the U.N. and that should scare the heck out of everyone who has ever been free.

yep. No love lost for Gaddafi but this whole operation is way out of line and very troubling. Also, in the words of (I believe) Colin Powell, if you break it, you own it. Now the west owns a real mess and one has to wonder, for what?

Exactly what they accused Bush of doing for the last eight years.

They are looking for gold and WMD’s. My guess is we are also helping with “advisers” on the ground.

Run Muammar, Run! LOL!

I have no love for that repressive, evil, puffed up peacock, but I think he's really going to embarrass some people before this is over. I could be wrong.

Notice how none of his family has been killed or captured? Despite several false claims by the rebels? I also noticed a glaring ommision in the coverage over the last few days. There wasn't anybody in Gaddafi's compound. NATO bombed the walls since the rebels were unable to make any type assault on their own. The next thing you see is gun toting looters mugging for the camera. No bodies, no prisoners, no corpses, no return fire. The only people that got shot were those hit by the celebratory bullets that didn't magically disappear when fired in the air.

There's a reason Gaddafi overthrew a kingdom at the age of 27 and stayed in power for 42 years. He's got really, really good self preservation instincts.

I agree. A lot of people are going to have egg on their faces over this “Arab Spring” thing, IMHO. The Middle East is being turned into a powder keg. It’s not going to be pretty when it finally blows. Yeah, they’ll probably take out Israel but America is going to suffer a lot of collateral damage from this fiasco. Everything is going according to the communist party’s plan.

SAS and other NATO commando units have been running this op from git go. So sick of the lies. Bush could not have gotten by with one/100th of this crap. Media would have ruined him. Now they proclaim Bambi was “vindicated” (For what?)

Garsh, so much for the humanitarian effort that was to be the only mission for NATO...

This whole thing doesn’t even make any sense whatsoever. These aren’t even Libyan rebels, they’re insurgents called in by a journalist named Hajj or Hajji and provided by the grand old Mozlem Brotherhood. And they are funded by Moammahr’s own money that Oblame-o handed over to them.

As disgusting as Moammahr is, I can’t help but hope that he does blow eggs all over this cadre of krap that’s going on in his country. He’s already got McLaim mumbling in his cups after crowing about his imminent demise.

I agree! Run Moammahr, RUN!

Look guys—its not our war—its an Anglo-French war and its all about getting cheap oil, oil exploration contracts etc...They are Europeans so they don’t give a farthing for “Blood for oil” talk. The French especially are underhanded and will do what ever is in their national interests—They have proved this time and again. Italy and Germany may get in at the end game and pick up some of the scraps. I only hope Hillary get some goodies for the old USA. As for Gaddafi, I hope they blow him to H*ll along with his sons and the bomber they released. Europe will not let this tumble into a mess—mark my words. The English & French are not Americans—they can be right Bast*rds when they wish.

No. It would have been better to let him continue to sell to the consuming nations while keeping a lid on the feral towel heads in Libya. I’m thinking this whole thing was designed as a message to Iran

Nope. Israel will go nuclear before they allow themselves to be "taken out".

I was hoping Gaddafi would send Libyan teams to hunt the Prime Minister of England, in retaliation for their occupation of Ireland.

“Yeah, they’ll probably take out Israel...”

That’s a distinct possibility. Before Israel falls, they’ll be sure to turn a large number of Middle East cities into radioactive rubble too.
