Karen DeCoster is thinking of entering the lighting business.
DeCoster, a certified public accountant from Detroit, has no experience in the field, but after hoarding 100-watt incandescent bulbs for months, she’s hoping to sell them on Craigslist for a profit.
Starting in January, the traditional 100-watt incandescent bulbs that many Americans look to when lighting their homes will become a hot commodity. New federal efficiency standards, passed as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, will make the production of these bulbs illegal then, followed by 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs in later years.
As the new standards gain publicity, concerned consumers, as well as members of the design community, are stocking up on the bulbs they’ve come to know and love. The new, more energy-efficient alternatives to the traditional incandescent bulbs — including halogen incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescents known as CFLs and LED bulbs — are considered by many to cast a harsh, overly bright glow or too weak of a light. Other complaints include their expense, while some medical experts say CFLs can exasperate or trigger migraines.
“I despise fluorescents; it’s too bright of a light, too obnoxious,” DeCoster said in an interview with msnbc.com. “These edicts always come from the government. It’s an attack on civilization. It’s a condemnation on our standard of living.”

I recently bought a 5-7 year supply. I didn’t buy more because I keep thinking that somebody will come to their senses.
Also, I don’t need 100w bulbs in every lamp. Next year, I’ll start the 60w stockpile.
I’ve got about two year’s worth. I guess I’ll go out and get some more - not as many to last through my death - I hope, lol!
I love the woman who is hoarding and selling bulbs - American enterprise at its very finest.
No doubt the feds will make it illegal to sell the old bulbs; kind of like illicit drugs..... One thing the feds know well: POWER.
A strange phenomenom when a country tells us what kind of light bulbs we have to buy.
Even stranger when not one of the fluorescent bulbs is made in this counry.
Soon only outlaws will own an incandescent bulbs.
I have a lamp in my livingroom the uses one of those 3 different brightness bulbs, What do I do with that lamp? What do I do with the bulbs that are hooked to my dimmer switch, since fluorescent cannot be dimmed?
I suppose this isn’t the most stupid law Congress has ever come up with, but it is right there at the top 5. Obamacare of course surpases it.
Absolutely! What an easy job: chasing down middle-class people hoarding light bulbs. Wouldn’t you want to get that assignment when you could be hunting down Muslim terrorists?
I think that 150 watt 3 way bulbs and 200 watt bulbs are not banned. I think they will continue to be available.
Bulbs 100 watt and less are to be replaced....... I’m pretty sure i made that determination some time ago.

In any event, this ban will be a hidden boon to the GOP. Come January when the public sees this take effect, they’ll be very upset. And there will be some libs who will take flack from their poorer constituents. How is some inner city family supposed to afford a 10 bulb to replace one that cost them 69 cents at Wal Mart the year prior?
Our only problem was that Bush was the dim bulb who signed this bill into law.

How many of those flourescent bulbs are going to be smashed during a tornado, hurricane, or earthquake? They are a danger to the environment. Where is the EPA in all this?
Is there a loophole of some sort in the ban? I ask because shortly after this ban became law some stores around here began to sell 90, 65, and 55 watt bulbs- or at least the boxes were labelled as such- in place of the usual 100, 75 and 60 watts. I’d never seen that before.
Phased ban.... Next year go the 75 watters, then the following year, 60 watt bulbs.
Praise Bush.... What a ridiculous law.
Sorry folks, your local utility is prepared to determine what your usage “should be”.
If your usage doesn’t decline by the “calculated” amount, some period after the ban, your utility will penalize your “excess consumption”.
