I've suggested that often, though in Lincoln Park, Chicago. I've heard speculation from some knowledgeable individuals that those giant racoons known as black bears may make it to the Chicago area in a few more decades. Live in the forest preserves ringing the city and scavange.
Can't shoot endangerd or threatened species to protect property, even your favorite dog. Your like and limb are ALWAYS threatened when explaining an incident like this, forget the property.

I used to own a little place back in the woods near there. We had bears on our place, though we never saw them. The dogs kept them clear of the house. But they clawed certain lodge pole pines until they fell over. Pretty hard to miss those signs. LOL...
I did see a brown bear one time. It was walking along the road just north of Rathdrum.
