Do you have any idea , in NYC alone, how many terraces and rooftop gardens there are..I'd say it's in the hundreds of thousand....and all of them have chairs, tables, plants....which can become lethal missiles if not brought inside...
Surprises me, too. After going through Ike, I just want to shake ‘em all and tell tehm to hurry up and get ready and be prepared!
I remember the horrific flooding from Agnes, but wind wasn't the big issue with that storm...Irene will be a different story.
Come to think of it...wasn't there a 'It Could Happen Tomorrow' show based on a cat-5 hitting New York? This won't be a cat-5, but it will be nasty if it hits NY...a track just west of the city would be the worse-case scenario.
I’m hoping NE PA will be spared.
I hope so, too, angcat!
You will likely get a lot of rain but winds not so much.
That’s fine I don’t mind the rain.
Likely this storm will pass right over or very close to NYC. It won’t be pretty. Don’t be in a tunnel or the subway.
Here in central MA it will be the winds and possible tornado activity being on the east side of the hurricane. I would prefer the west side of it and I’d take the rain instead. I’m praying this things passes off the coast or if it does go west it goes WAY west.
I’m in the Merrimack Valley in NE Massachusetts and we’re dug in. My mom tells awful stories about the Hurricane of ‘38 and I’d rather not have my own tales to tell. But if it’s my turn to write the stories, then so be it.
Generator, with extra gas — check. Chainsaw, with gas pre-mixed — check. Food — lots of it. Water — stockpiled. Charcoal for the barbecue — check. Batteries in the radio and kerosene in the lanterns — check. Extra bedding for friends and family who might need shelter — check. Neighbor’s scary-ass tree leaning over my house — well, umm.
OK, all set. Bring it on!
This is New England, kiddies. We’re supposed to be leathery old yankees who can ride out any-damn-thing, from the redcoats to hurricanes to nor’easters.
Irene ... bring your best, bitch.
Yesterday the storm track would have had Irene going directly over us here out past 495, but today she’d be going west of us. That concerns me. We’re not too far from Rhode Island.
And Martha's Vinyard lies just off Cape Code.
Somebody needs to take a break from the (entirely justified) bashing of Karl Rove, for his Palin and Perry bashing, and post a pic of the Rove Hurricane Machine. Looks like Irene may go right over BO's vacation rental.
Of course, hurricanes are hard to steer. : )
After listening to him on Hannity for the past couple days, I’d be a little nervous, if I lived where you do.
Might want to dust off the Y2K supplies.
This site has great maps also:

Track is now almost outside of MA along the NY border. Good for rainfall, bad for wind.
This is not good. I fear we may have some trees come down and lose part of the driveway.
There was another FReeper who was buying a generator yesterday or the day before for medical reasons. If I recall correctly, he does dialysis at home. It’s absolutely essential not to rely on anyone but yourself in this kind of situation, imho.
I’m your Mom’ age, I guess, and when a little kid I remember the Hurricane of ‘38 and ALL the fallen trees! I lived in Winthrop, which is essentially an island, but it was more wind than water. I’m in NJ now and surrounded by old trees. Gonna be fun!
When you mentioned the kerosene lanterns, it made me look to the mantel over our fireplace to check out the 5 kerosene lamps sitting there. Needs some washing and refilling. Thanks for the reminder.
Oh — we have a generator, but I also have 2 extra charged batteries for my BlackBerry. I don’t mind the lights going out or not having the computer, but I WANT MY B’BERRY!
