California asks for relief from federal No Child Left Behind law

SACRAMENTO -- State schools Chief Tom Torlakson has asked for a reprieve from No Child Left Behind.

Torlakson sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan Tuesday asking that California be granted a waiver from the law's mandates, California Department Office of Education officials announced today.

"Relief is needed immediately before more schools suffer for another school year under inappropriate labels and ineffective intervention," Torlakson said.

Schools that don't meet the mandates of No Child Left Behind over multiple years can be closed or have their staff's replaced.

Officials at the U.S. Department of Education announced recently that states will be offered relief from the statue if they can demonstrate they are invoking reform that includes adopting college- and career-ready standards, using and developing teacher data that incorporates student test scores and developing a new accountability system.

Torlakson acknowledges that these conditions "present problems for California" and says the state is "working hard to develop" an accountability system.

Simple: Don’t comply with the requirements, don’t get the funding. “You can go your own way ... “

Isn’t this just the perfect example of the theory vs. the reality of the Liberal Welfare Regulatory State? All kinds of government transfer programs based on high minded regulations and standards. But once the government drones get the money, there is no way in Hell they can comply. The end result is gimme the money and let me off the hook on the standards.

“Look, we only want to leave a couple of them behind, what’s so bad about that?”

Never mind the ongoing scam of narrowing the black/white "achievement gap" that is exploited annually as an excuse for more funding. It's never going away. Stop the scam. Let's see some progress on better scores within a racial/ethnic group. The union slobs can't even do that.

WE ARE NOW LIVING UNDER COMMUNISM. There was a time when we could refuse Federal funding, and still have schools that educated our children. Somehow I doubt it is any longer possible to act independently. Thanks to such programs as NCLB (THANK YOU GW Bush! and to the NEA!). But if we can get vouchers and free choice of what school our kids attend, we may have a chance yet! It is certainly worth a try.

I don’t know whether “seceding” from the Federal Department of Education is a realistic possibility or not. There was a state (Montana? One of the Dakotas?) that raised their speed limit to rip-roaring and declined Federal highway funds.

It’s not as if counties and states don’t take enough to cover reasonable schooling costs. Rather, the expenses - from the 50% of non-teaching employees to the palatial buildings - are simply not reasonable.

And to think My dear Grandmother, born in kl867, ws a teacher who taught in a one room school house until she married! God bless her. We have fallen far from those sweet days.

Go Galt on the school system.

Homeschool.

I find it interesting that the homeschool threads ten years ago used to be huge flame wars, “How dare you suggest that the public school is abuse”... yada yada yada.

Sigh. IF all conservatives HOMESCHOOLED it would collapse the system. They all get money based on ENROLLMENT. This is also why the illegals are SO welcomed.

When will Freepers wake up and get OUT OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

It is not that hard to teach a person who is not seriously disabled to read, write, and do arithmetic. Even the thickest of my children (James) has had these skills by age 7; the bright ones can read at 3. Beyond that, anything else he wants to accomplish can be done by point him toward the correct books in the library.

But this wouldn’t employ millions upon millions of unionized government “workers,” now would it?
