I got used to the SMS text messaging from my BlackBerry at work, so I paid the $4.95/mo for the same on my Verizon cellphone and unlimited texts. I won’t pay to use their web access - finicky screen, too small, and poor presentation.

I think the best way to explain the problem with Alert PA is by asking a few questions. First, can you receive the same information from the private sector? You can tune into your local news on radio and TV in a time of emergency and get better information. You can talk to friends on the phone, email or txt and really zero in on emergencies. You can subscribe, for free, to commercial sites via text (SMS) and get better information. (I know. The configuration on Alert PA chops detail information. I rather not mention the ditsy, dumb blond, that has no clue about technology that ran the Alert PA project.)
Given that you can get better information from the private sector for free, how much should the commonwealth spend on Alert PA?
The initial contract for Alert PA is coming to an end, and it will be posted for competitive bid. There are transitional costs, plus a new license agreement that will occur if a new vendor is chosen. Given that friends of DemoRats were given the first contract, do you think the same company will receive the next contract considering Republicans control the legislative and executive branches of commonwealth government?
Lastly, do you think this doesn't affect you if you do not pay taxes in the commonwealth? Consider this, a large majority of funds for Alert PA came from the federal government, it does affect you. I'd rather dollars from homeland security went to killing radical muslims.
I made it through Irene without Alert PA. I ignore the messages I get from it because it is equivalent to the boy who cried wolf. (Note: I have to receives the messages due to work.)
