I had all those hobbies too.

That and whittling. Dad found an old rusty pocket knife and gave it to me. I cleaned it up and cut stuff.

Dad and I would both be felons if we did something like that today.

Today your hobbies would be:

1. stick=gun, cowboys and indians - violent, no guns allowed, racist.

2. Fort = military, violence. Might hurt yourself building it or playing in it.

3. Damin a creek - Eco criminal, EPA, Dept of Natl Resources fines and punishment.

4. House out of cardboard box - only allowed if you’re seeing what it’s like to be homeless.

5. Fishing. Again, need license, may snag endangered fish.

6. Pickup baseball game - too competitive, no adults telling everyone they’re all great, nobody to umpire and bring snacks nobody wants to eat.

7. Red light, Simon says, etc - all games where people can lose. No adults to supervise.

Of course I played these kinds of things too, but today ain’t yesterday.

Not many, I assure you. My son was born in Germany. The pediatrician’s office was downstairs from my doctor. I never saw one non-Islamic woman come in or out of that building other than myself.

Heh. Another son said he wanted a cell phone. “Turn 18, get a job, move out of our house,” I said.

This whole subject is analyzed brilliantly in the book “America Alone” by Mark Steyn.

So many books, so little time...especially if I spend all my free time Freeping!

I've been to Germany once, about 20 years ago, to visit my sister and brother-in-law while they were stationed over there. I remember thinking I saw more dogs than children while I was there.

As a percentage of the overall population, Germany has fewer children than any other country in Europe. Only 16.5 percent of the population is younger than 18 years of age. In other European countries, like France, Great Britain and the Netherlands, those figures are over 20 percent. In Turkey, almost one-third of the country's population of more than 72 million people is younger than 18. The countries in Europe with the smallest populations of children are Germany, Bulgaria (16.7 percent) and Italy (16.9 percent).

Reminds me of Donald Rumsfeld: "As you know, you go to war with the Army you have. They're not the Army you might want or wish to have at a later time."

If it comes to it, Germany will be going to war with an infantry of pensioners.

Soccer is the #1 sport in Germany. Assuming fields are available, why doesn't the German government make an investment in youth soccer leagues?

We Americans may not find it exciting, but the equipment cost to parents is minimal: ball ($25), shin guards ($20), shoes ($40), a couple pairs of shorts, tee-shirts and socks and a game uniform ($75).

Having been there, I can say that Hamburg is the seediest of German cities (kind of like the Detroit or Cleveland of Germany). One area of the city has prostitutes in storefront windows. If a woman isn’t in the window, she’s busy earning money to pay for her kids’ hobbies.

I grew up poor and had plenty of hobbies. My favorite was collecting Monarch caterpillars and raising them into butterflies. Didn’t cost a penny.

We have three blue swallowtail cocoons right now, and should have two more in a couple of days.

“...German households can’t afford to finance hobbies for their children...”

That statement is an example of pure "entitlement mentality."

"About one-fifth of the households do not take annual vacations.

In most of the households, however, fundamental needs like food and clothing are covered, as well as annual birthday parties."

Wow! I'm fascinated by this article. I love the statement which suggests that an "annual birthday party" is a fundamental need like food and clothing. Mind boggling!

As for annual vacations, I take a one-week or a two-week vacation -- if I can afford it -- approximately every 3 or 4 years. SO WHAT!?
