Have your fun, Gulf Coasters. Go ahead, LOL at us.
And Californians, please join in.
It is a national pastime, apparently, to whip out our rulers and measure our natural disasters against one another in an endless, cross-country, chest-thumping smackdown.
Yes, youre totally right, America, about Washingtons wimpiness.
We nearly crashed Twitter last week when the 5.8-magnitude earthquake knocked the political biographies off our bookshelves and tipped over our patio chairs. The horror!
As Hurricane Irene churned toward the Mid-Atlantic, we bought enough dry goods to stock a humanitarian aid airlift for an entire continent and seriously discussed who could eat whom if it went all Donner party on us.
It became a game, trying to find D batteries. CVS, Wegmans, Safeway, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Office Depot all wiped out.
In one massive suburban grocery store Friday evening, it was impossible to find peanut butter or bread. So thats what we plan to do if all heck breaks loose? PB&Js galore?
Of course, New Yorkers were a bit more clever and boozy about it, buying out all the ginger beer the key ingredient in one of my favorite libations, a dark and stormy.
Bars whipped up hurricane drinks, foodies made insane frittatas and my kids wore their headlamps all night, asking: Is the power out yet? Is the power out yet? When is the power going to go out, already?!
Sorry, kids. Irene may be the most overhyped hurricane of our lifetime. Weather Web page hits and TV ratings went through the roof. In fact, thats about all Irene did to roofs, at least in most places.
At dawn, we cleared away the branches and righted the garbage cans while the nation snickered.

Yooooouuuuu betcha!!!!
There seems to be a lot of damage and flooding in Vermont. I’m sure a few other places. This is a rain event though, and the ground was already saturated.
Ah, but never let a photop go to waste!
Don’t most weather sources pump up the coverage on every storm now to get ratings?
We were laughing WITH ya.
If I were them I would hang on to that stuff for the coming economic collapse.
Of course being liberals, they'll probably throw it in the garbage and then whine about how people aren't green enough.
"Crybaby"
Democrats never met a crisis they didn't like, or didn't want to make worse.
Not to mention earthquake fun

Save those batteries for the next hurricane.
I don’t know but we still don’t have power on second night.
In terms of hurricanes (tropical cyclones and lethal rum-based adult beverages alike), New York has a ways to go before it catches New Orleans.
Sorry, ‘butt of snickers’ reminds me too much of ‘pool poopy’...
over-hyped because neapolitano, feeble, the u.s. coast guard, cities, governors et al
did not want to spun by the msm as was george w 43.
I think that this somehow relates to what I often think: TV weathermen have one of the dullest jobs on Earth. They duly report that it’s going to be hot in the summer and cold in the winter, with the sameness relieved by the occasional thunderstorm and a snowstorm now and then. But Ahh! when a hurricane appears they go bonkers and cannot say enough about the TERRiBLE DAMAGE it’s going to inflict.
They can’t win. Over-hype and be laughed at or don’t give it adequate attention and suffer enormous loss. Ask Gov Blanco or Mayor Nagin about that. Or even Pres Bush. I’d rather prepare and not need my bunker than be caught flatfooted. The problem is continuous over-hyping so, like the boy who cried wolf, no one will pay attention when they will need to.
FOX NEWS wasted the whole weekend on Irene.
oh my temp out side in NW Harris Cty, TX was 109 degrees...since this part of Texas is the most A/C part of the world...so what....you don't hear us gripping and whining like wussies...
