Chickens are no longer backyard outlaws in Sacramento.
With a unanimous vote tonight, the City Council passed an ordinance that will allow city residents to keep up to three egg-laying hens in their back yards starting Nov. 1.
...Dr. Glennah Trochet, the county's public health officer, said she has spoken with state health officials and poultry experts at UC Davis and neither recommended striking down a backyard chicken ordinance because of concerns over disease, including the bird flu.

No, you need a rooster to fertilize the eggs if you want chicks. Otherwise you still get eggs but no chicks.
Um, no you don’t need a rooster to get eggs. I have six hens who give me 5 to 6 eggs every day with no rooster within 4 miles. However if I wanted to get FERTILIZED eggs, I would then need to go shopping for a rooster. It’s the old boy/girl, birds and bees thingy. I don’t want to raise chicks so I don’t have a roo around.

Huh, I always thought you needed one every couple of months to fool the chickens into continuing to lay eggs. That without a rooster, they’d eventually stop.

Not sure, I traded them and a bunch of hens for a female Royal Palm turkey. We kept the rooster that ruled the henhouse until it attacked my husband one time too often from behind and he chopped its head off...then no roosters anymore...my husband laughed insanely as he cut off it head...That was one mean rooster....I found an old steel shovel from an kids shovel and bucket and hung it outside of the coop. If he was in there, I took the shovel with me..got him once in the head real good and he left me alone most of the time...
What are they crowing about?
Oh, good. Then their limit is three million chickens within city limits? No doubt Sacto’s city council of dirt worshipers won’t mind when that attracts thousands of foxes, coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions, some of which will have rabies, others of which will feed on our pets and children. Humans don’t matter.
These people are going to learn a bit about survival of the fittest in nature and the relationship between predators and prey. It should be fun to watch.

And contrary to popular citified belief, you DO NOT need a rooster to get eggs.
You ONLY need a rooster for fertile eggs for hatching.
Commercial laying facilities DO NOT have roosters among their hens.
I got about 15 layers with two roosters.
Idiotcy in action. She needs a wire crook (8 feet of 3/16 high tensile wire or bar with a six inch bend in it to catch the chicken by the leg.
Those Chickens dig more holes than dogs do ... Ducks don’t dig, they eat bugs and weeds they just don’t lay as many eggs and if your Ducks get out of your yard you don’t have to catch each one individually ... just bang a feed pan or herd them ...
Chickens are much better suited for the Chicken Coop ... Ducks make great walking Lawn Decorations .... and they don’t crow in the morning

No roosters; that’s what I understand from reading about this urban movement concerning chickens.
I read Hobby Farmer magazine. Good information mostly, but from some of the “sustainable” editorials on the last page, no doubt some of the magazines employees are flaming self-styled Progressives who’ve never shoveled genuine ‘hot’ manure other than the worthless literary type ;-]
While traveling in Spain, a friend and I stayed in a hotel in the old part of Seville. My friend, being tired, lay down for a nap that afternoon and was kept awake by a rooster constantly crowing from a nearby rooftop. This was in a modern European city of over a million souls.
Most folks don’t understand why people in other countries keep chickens and ducks in urban areas. It is because governments and national economies are unstable. Thus raising your own food makes sense, and during a crisis may be your only ticket for a meal.
I believe more and more we will see Americans raising their own food or buying locally from farm producers. The era of the huge farms employing migrant workers, and then ship produce thousands of miles, is coming to an end.
