When a UC-Berkeley student and a professor meet in court.....

A bizarre showdown between well-known indie journalist Josh Wolf and an optometry professor is set to reach its dramatic conclusion Friday in Berkeley Small Claims Court.

Cal Prof. Robert DiMartino wants Wolf to reimburse him $1,066, and a judge will decide if he has to.

But this dispute is about cash like "Bleak House" is about a will.

To Wolf, it's a question of democratic principles. A known First Amendment-hugger, the June graduate of UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism first gained notoriety in 2007 after serving 226 days in federal prison for refusing to give police the video he'd shot of a violent demonstration in San Francisco.

To DiMartino, it's also a matter of principle. Why should he pay the $1,066 when it was Wolf who first took him to court?

It all started in Nov. 2009. Wolf was well into the first semester of his masters' program when a group of Cal students, angry over a planned 32 percent tuition increase, stormed Wheeler Hall and occupied the building into the night. Wolf followed them in, camera rolling. Later, when campus administrators required the protesters to sit through individual disciplinary hearings under penalty of explusion, Wolf's role as a student journalist did not shield him from the punishment.

The chairman of Wolf's disciplinary panel was DiMartino.

Too bad they can't throw wannabe-anarchist Wolf back in jail.

I never expected myself seeing eye to eye with a professor of optometry, but in this case I'm with the professor--why should he be out more than $1,000 because he was taken to court by a punk for just doing his job?

I don't buy the premiss that all Berkeley professors are automatically evil. I know one in particular (now retired) who is very conservative and outspokenly anti-Marxist.

I’m sorry I have looked into the eyes of Berkeley professors and pure evil looked back.

You can’t be completely correct I got my MS EE there during the fury of the anti-war movement.

On a few occasions, I wore my uniform. Not one soul ever noticed me.

Most prof’s were great.

Too bad I’ve never put that degree or others to use.
