Answering your questions about We the People
The White House Blog ^ | 9/2/11 | Katelyn Sabochik

Posted on 09/02/2011 3:46:48 PM PDT by EBH

Yesterday, we announced that we’ll be rolling out a cool new tool on WhiteHouse.gov that will change the way you engage with the Obama Administration. It’s called We the People and it’s a platform for all Americans to create and sign petitions asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of issues.

Since we announced that this new tool is coming soon to WhiteHouse.gov, we’ve gotten a lot of great questions and feedback, so we thought we’d take a stab at answering a few of the common questions we’ve gotten so far. In case you missed it, Macon Phillips, Director of Digital Strategy here at the White House, was fielding questions on Twitter yesterday and you can check out some of the questions and answers on Storify.

And don’t forget to sign up to be the first to know when We the People is live.

How will the White House decide which petitions to respond to? The initial threshold for a petition to be reviewed by the White House and get a response is 5,000 signatures in 30 days.

Who will be reviewing and responding to petitions? Petitions that meet the signature threshold will be reviewed by a standing group of White House staff, routed to any other appropriate offices and generate an official, on-the-record response. Most of the time, a response will come from a policy official at the White House or at a federal agency. From time to time, President Obama may also respond to petitions as well.

It’s our goal to respond to petitions that cross the signature threshold (initially 5,000 signatures) in as timely a manner as possible, but in some cases it may take a few weeks for us to respond.

Will the signature thresholds ever change? This is the first time we’ve tried something like this, so we may find that we need to adjust the signature thresholds for petitions to receive a response from the White House as people start to use the tool. If we do change the signature thresholds at any point, we’ll announce the changes publicly on the site, and any changes to signature thresholds will only apply to petitions created after we made the change.

Initially, a petition must receive 150 signatures in order to be publicly searchable on the We the People site and 5,000 signatures within 30 days in order to get a response from the White House.

When we We the People launch? We the People will launch very soon, so start thinking about the issues that matter to you and who you’ll ask to join you. And don’t forget to sign up to be the first to know when it is live.

Who can create or sign petitions? Anyone over the age of 13 can create or sign a petition through We the People. In order to participate, users must verify their email address and create an account on WhiteHouse.gov.

Got more questions? Use the twitter hashtag #WHWeb to give the White House digital team advice and feedback or submit your feedback here.

Whoa...this is like way outside the bounds.

Step #1 Create or Sign a Petition Anyone 13 or older can create or sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. To get started you’ll need to create an account and verify your email address. Start thinking about the issues that matter to you, what you would like the Obama Administration to do to address the important challenges facing our country, and who you’ll ask to join you.

Step #2 Build Support and Gather Signatures Creating or signing a petition is just the first step. It’s up to you to build support for a petition and gather even more signatures. Use email, Facebook, Twitter and word of mouth to tell your friends, family and coworkers about the petitions you care about.

Step #3 The White House Reviews and Responds If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and an official response will be issued. And we’ll make sure that the petition is sent to the appropriate policy makers in the Administration.

The initial threshold to get a response from the Administration is 5,000 signatures.

The commie ‘RATS in the Barry regime couldn’t come up with an ORIGINAL idea if their lives depended on it. Those kids knew that “We the People” had been adopted for use by the TEA Party. The fags in the Obama regime decided to hijack the phrase to appear as though they are Americans also. What a bunch of screwballs.

How about a petition for Obama and Biden to resign.

I’ve been getting phone calls from “We the People.” Now I wonder if they are from Obama of the TEA party people. I sure don’t want to pick up for Obama.

What are local government and state and regional reps for then? We should petition his Highness directly? Then, if you are chosen, you may get a response from his Shallowness himself.

I was thinking more along the lines for impeachment, college records, birth certificate, social security numbers...

FTA:

Double standard?

Note you only need 5,000 signatures and it will get turned over to agencies and policy makers.

And it doesn’t even have to be eligible voters.

This is a bad deal and stinks to high heaven.

Actually, that would be interesting.

I plan to put up a petition for a full unconditional repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. I have about 120 people already lined up to be among my first 150 signers, and we'll see if it actually gets published on the site when it crosses the threshhold and what happens when 5000 signatures happen.

I also plan some additional petitions for the "We the People" section on whitehouse.gov.:

I'll predict right now, this "We the People" area on whitehouse.gov will never actually be opened up, and it will not show petitions from "TEA Partiers" ever.

If it shows only "progressive" petitions, like card check and "living wage" stuff, it will be obviously political and propaganda and we'll all melt the phone lines at the capitol telling Congress to pull the plug on this blatant abuse of taxpayer funded servers.

The BLACK HOUSE only wants to create confusion for anyone who’s thinking about what and who “WE THE PEOPLE”, or THE TEA PARTY will do for America. You KNOW that the BLACK HOUSE wants to know who is stupid enough to have anything to do with them or to let them know who you are.

This whole thing is nothing but a PHISHING SCAM to gather EMAIL ADDRESSES...to solicit $$$ for Obozo’s re-erection campaign.

NOTHING MORE THAN ILLEGAL USE of taxpayer funded resources for ELECTION PIMPING.

Yes it is on the White House website that is paid for by taxpayer money.

Why do you think that they need your EMAIL ADDRESS just to view the petitions?

Once they have your email address they will put it on their list. You’ll start getting solicitations for $$$. They will put your email onto the DNC list and hound you. They will cross check your name and email against IRS and FEC records to see what you’ve been donating in the past.

For a regular person like me, 5000 is a lot of signatures. It would not surprise me at all if the WH used this to show “public opinion” with the petitions engineered by various progressive groups. You are right, it does stink.

They are circumventing the normal representative process. I would normally speak too, email, fax, or write my House Representative or Senator....

Under this scheme nothing is going through the people’s representation.

PS.

These are people under voting age...
Potentially how is this checked for legitmacy of signatures?
Petitions were through registered voters no?
whats to stop fraudulent signature generation...?

This is real bad.

Exactly. It’s King Obama, allowing the subjects to petition him directly, should the “importance” or “urgency” of the petition rise to the particular level that catches the eye of the Court Staff. Of course, the Court Staff already know what His Dumbness wants to see float to the top of the petition pile.
