Stung by the President on Air Quality, Environmentalists Weigh Their Options
New York Times ^ | September 3, 2011 | Leslie Kaufman

Posted on 09/03/2011 8:06:49 PM PDT by lbryce

For environmental groups, it was the final hard slap that brought a long-troubled relationship to the brink.

In late August, the State Department gave a crucial go-ahead on a controversial pipeline to bring tar sands oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Then on Friday, leading into the holiday weekend, the Obama administration announced without warning that it was walking away from stricter ozone pollution standards that it had been promising for three years and instead sticking with Bush-era standards.

John D. Walke, clean air director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, an advocacy group based in New York, likened the ozone decision to a “bomb being dropped.”

Mr. Walke and representatives of other environmental groups saw the president’s actions as brazen political sellouts to business interests and the Republican Party, which regards environmental regulations as job killers and a brick wall to economic recovery.

The question for environmentalists became, what to do next?

“There is shock and chaos here,” Mr. Walke said, “so I do not know. I can’t answer that question.” But he added that his group would resume a smog lawsuit against the government that it had dropped because it had been lulled into believing that this administration would enact tougher regulations without being forced to do so by the courts.

Political analysts watching the Obama administration’s pullback from the environmental agenda this past month say that in the current climate there is little chance that environmentalists or their allies will ever side with the Republicans. After all, the Republican-led House of Representatives has been aggressively moving to curtail protections for endangered species and regulations for clean air and water, and most of the Republican presidential candidates have been intensely critical of any government effort to address climate change.

Its quite possible that they will find some Judge to order the implementation of the regulation. That way Obama keeps his hands clean. Wouldn’t rule it out.

Popcorn. Time to break out the popcorn.

If we are lucky it will be a three-reeler double feature. With cartoons, a newsreel, and a short feature.

The only way environmentalists could achieve their goal is to remove all human influence from the planet. They have no right to use our system of govt to ram their cult-zealot agenda down our throat.

John D. Walke is clearly not at all effective in his job and should simply be released by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

I am sure they can find someone much younger but certainly as effective, at half the pay!

The NRDC is getting more leftist/marxist and extreme because they realize that the American people have discovered their fraudulent agenda.

The so-called “clean air” regulations were bullshit to begin with, esp. regarding CO2, and were going to be such job-killers that Obama would lose a lot of the labor union members votes (i.e. those connected to the trucking industry, auto industry, oil/gasoline industry, etc).

Since CO2 had nothing to do with the ozone issue, it was a no-go from the start as organized business and scientific opposition grew to proposed regulations. Ozone can be regulated with sane programs, but sanity is not one of the EPA’s strong points, nor is good science for that matter.

However, electrical storms also create a lot of ozone “i.e. the fresh air smell” you get after a thunderstorm. The issue is how to control it when it becomes dangerous to human health in specific spots (getting rid of the real “old clunkers” helped to clean up the air).
Putting some new mechanical controls on ozone-creating industrial facilites will also help, but within reason.

As for the Center for American Progress (CAP), it is a Soros marxist front and if don’t believe it, look at its leaders/fellows and you will find it full of reds, marxists, socialists, and leftist wackos.

The same for MoveOn.org, another Soros front.

The air can be cleaned up using existing technology in a rational and pragmatic manner but these groups are not rational, pragmatic, or pro-business. They are the anti-capitalist arm of the Democratic Party, i.e. the enemies of America, and should be treated as such.

Mr. Suckling said, adding that more public actions and lawsuits are the way to get Mr. Obama’s attention.

Hey, Suckling, instead of wasting your time and money on lawsuits and public action, whatever the heck that might be, why don't you vote for the Republican? That'll get Obozo's attention!

I worked the GOP booth at the State Fair last week....had one guy tell me hen just didn’t understand our stance on Global Warming....and I reiterated mine to him....don’t believe in it (as man caused)....anyhoo,...he proceeded to ask me how I could believe that...He said....”We live in a closed system, and we have been polluting it with gas, smoke, etc for years and we are causing it” I said, well, then what about the Volcano’s...he dismissed that. He just rolled his eyes at me...and did the same, when I saw him walk by later.
