UPDATE 7:30 P.M.: Mark Stanford, the fire chief for the Texas Forest Service , said subdivisions have been evacuated there but they have no estimate on what structures have been lost.

People are being told to evacuate to the First Baptist Church in Smithville and Bastrop Middle School, Stanford said.

In addition, State Highways 71 and 21 in Bastrop County have been closed, Stanford said.

Update, 6:48 p.m.: Wildfires have consumed more than 6,000 acres in Bastrop County, and firefighters are still working to get the blazes under control.

Just heard from a friend on Facebook who lives in Bastrop.

“At my son’s house. We think we lost everything. Had no time to get much.” Other friend of hers talked about being evacuated from Tahitian.

Fervent prayers for all in harm’s way tonight in my beloved state!

...the resiliency of Texans is legendary and the Lone Star State will come roaring back to its rightful place of supremacy. God Blessed Texas in the past and may He Bless us today and forever.

Amen brother. We'll get through this.

the Lone Star State will come roaring back

Roaring may not be the right word at the moment. ;)

Roaring may not be the right word at the moment. ;)

Yes, in hindsight that was a poorly chosen word. How about "...the Lone Star State will come bouncing back...".

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

I understand you are hurting.

I'm already praying.

BTW -- any word from Gov. Perry? Doesn't the Texas National Guard have firefighting capability?

(Or is the Tex. Government such that it's the Lieutenant Gov. or someone else who calls them out? I got weirded out enough finding out that FM 95 wasn't a radio station but a "Farm to Market" road.)

“Son said they could leave, but then they would not be allowed back in so they are staying.”

Here in central Oklahoma we had several wildfires last week. During one of them a subdivision was evacuated, but the fire did not reach them. While the owners were gone, burglars cleaned out at least four homes.

Roaring may not be the right word at the moment. ;)

Point well taken.

The brutal 100+ temps here in North Texas seem to have finally broken. Our outside thermometer only hit 95 today, so I'm taking a win on that.

Hopefully that's a small indicator that fall is pushing summer into the history books, and that rain is soon to follow. Please let it be so. We need it SO bad.
