UPDATE 7:30 P.M.: Mark Stanford, the fire chief for the Texas Forest Service , said subdivisions have been evacuated there but they have no estimate on what structures have been lost.

People are being told to evacuate to the First Baptist Church in Smithville and Bastrop Middle School, Stanford said.

In addition, State Highways 71 and 21 in Bastrop County have been closed, Stanford said.

Update, 6:48 p.m.: Wildfires have consumed more than 6,000 acres in Bastrop County, and firefighters are still working to get the blazes under control.

According to Bastrop Police Department Spokesman Michal Hubbard, hundreds of homes have been evacuated, including those at the Colony, west of the city of Bastrop, and Tahitian Village to the east. Several structures have been lost, he said

Prayers up for your friend - it’s so hard not knowing about loved ones who are in the path of this monster.

Hope and pray your friend is safe and that you can be in contact with her soon.

If Perry is smart he will go home tomorrow. If he is a politician he will go home after the Wed. debates.

Gov. Perry cancels campaign plans to assess Texas fire damage

The extensive damage from wildfires has Gov. Rick Perry cutting his presidential campaigning short.

A spokesperson with the governor's office says Perry won't be attending Sen. Jim DeMint's town hall forum in South Carolina Monday. He's expected to be back and tour the area Monday afternoon.

The forum was highly anticipated because the governor would have appeared with fellow GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Both are vying for an endorsement from DeMint.

He's still not my first choice, but he is doing his job as governor.

On the local San Antonio news, it appears the fire in Stone Oak is (at least for now) contained in a park, between two subdivisions.

They are evacuating some apartments and homes and have set up a shelter at Barbara Bush Middle School.

A lady said that when it first started, she saw a truck on fire..Maybe they were grilling or, pulled into a grassy area, and the truck caught the grass on fire..It’s not know at this time, but it is so dry here..lots of oak treess there.

El Gato.....hope you and those grands (and their parents) are all in safe areas.

Prayers for all of you in Texas.

We're all fine Kathy, thanks for your prayers. Texas needs them right now. I think I'll go out and check the local situation, I think I smell smoke

....

Yep, I can now see the smoke plume from the Ft. Hood range fire. it's not quite directly overhead, but close. Definitely more smoky smelling than earlier today. Wind is not high, but a good breeze.

Haven't heard directly from the daughters, but both are in good spots, fires to the east and fires to the west, but the wind is pretty much due north, and so they should be OK. If they needed to bug out, they'd probably call to come up here. :)

Lord - send all your Angels to protect those in harm’s way!

Because of the wildfires, our preacher (coC and VERY Conservative, Praise the Lord) changed from the message listed in the bulletin to speak this morning of Job. He emphasized that God is testing the steadfastness of Texans though the exceptional drought, searing heat and now this latest scourge of wildfires in our midst.

The message ended on a note of optimism that Texas will overcome these major setbacks and be restored. We must continue to have faith in Almighty God and pray without ceasing. Our prayers must not just be petitions but also of praise and thanksgiving for all the Good and Boundless Mercies that He has Bestowed upon us.

It is raining like crazy here in Annapolis Maryland and will the next four days. I wish we could give this to Texas. it is so annoying. We have gotten rain practically everyday since beginning August. I am getting sick of it big time. Luckily I cut the grass today or I would have a jungle by the end of the week. STOP THE RAIN FOR GOD’S SAKE!!!!!

Stone Oak.

Stone Oak is a subdivision in the north central part of San Antonio. A very well to do subdivision. It's near Camp Bullis Military reservation, just to the east of it. It's also outside the 1604 loop, which is the "outer" loop, about 15-20 miles from downtown San Antonio.

If the wind is from the north there, the fire would be heading for the bulk of San Antonio (8th largest city in the US). But apparently they've gotten the jump on it, and it's basically contained now.

That could have gotten ugly, very ugly.

This photo was taken a little north of my house, from one of the Ft. Hood housing areas.

It looks pretty much the same from my front yard.
